"Trick" to G paint color codes?

When I try to buy paint for my Carmine Red (code RAL 3002) G, I get a blank "does not compute" stare from all the paint shops.  I remember when I had some collision body work done years ago the place had trouble finding the paint....I think at that time I even called Erwin for some paint references and may have to do it again as neither I nor the body shop has any record of what paint code was ultimately used.

I also looked at this thread:

http://69.9.37.142/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=4222&posts=13&highlight=paint%20match&highlightmode=1#M44946

where Dai mentions the 4-digit code for his gray paint being translated into some other 3-digit code.

My question is this....can anyone tell me some translation rule for G color codes that will get them into numbers that most automotive paint shops will understand?  Or failing that, can anyone tell me a code they've used for the standard red on 460 Gs?

Thanks!

-Dave G.

RE: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

When I search with these options I usually get both 3 and 4 digit codes.

Re: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

For some reason the 460 G paint code has a 7 in front of the standard Mercedes Benz three digit code of that era. My code is 7172 on the G and the code on the TD's is 172. This is the same number in the paint chip selection in the brochure for the US '83 product line brochure. For some strange reason MBUSA chose to omit the G from that strong product linup, but I digress...
Dave, if your code is a 4 digit with a 7 in front try giving a paint shop the last three digits. Should work. Your Red was not offered for the US in '83. When my paint guru figured this out he dropped a BASF paint chip onto the truck and it dissapeared. Perfect. The Glasurit/Diamont codes are different but that system recognizes the Mercedes numbering system. Might be a bit more trouble with Dupont but it has to cross over. I hope this is clear. (The Glasurit clear coat is the Best!)

Well, on my truck it will be just a matter of WHERE he chose to drop the chip as there are about 6 different vintages of fade on there, depending on where you look.

As stated above, my paint code is a 4 digit nuber beginning with "3", 3002, to be exact.  I thought about asking the paint guy to look for "002", but I decided it would be easier just to go by there.  I'll have him try his chips on the lower part of the dash or something.  I think that's original paint, but I'll also have him try it against the stuff that was re-sprayed a few years ago (rear doors and back) because, original or not, I really like the way that looks.

They'll have to chip-match the silver anyway as that wasn't original.

I think I'll call Erwin today anyway.  Been too long since I talked with him.

Thanks for your thoughts, Dai!

RE: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

If I change your '85 to '80, it comes up with some blues and blacks.  If I ask it for a red in 1980, it comes up blank.

Re: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

I thought I once heard that the G colours are from the truck segment of Daimler-Benz?
If you look up 3002 in the Glasurit link you get 3*002, AUX code and a manufacturers code,
tried them?

http://www.ral.de/de/ral_farben/anwender/farbnamen_classic.php

I know G also had RAL 3005, it would be close but not original?

Re: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

You 'da man!  Yep, there it is, RAL3002, just like I posted from the brochure, Carmine Red.

So am I screwed if nobody here in Denver sells RAL paint?

Now that you mention it, I do remember something from the past about having to look under Mercedes Truck colors.  Maybe my paint guys can work with that.

Thanks!

I think I got it!

Thanks again for the RAL site refreence, and the "Mercedes Truck" memory jogger.  I was able to go to the Dupont website,

http://www.dupontrefinish.com/portal/

and under "color formulas and color pages" link, use the option to sort by manufacturer name and color name.  I typed Mercedes as the manufacturer, then selected Mercedes Truck from the list that came up.  Then for the color name selection I clicked on "show list"  and from that list found "Karminrot/RAL3002" and BINGO!  Got this page.   Selecting

http://color.dupontrefinish.info/scripts/colorweb.dll/stockcode?mfname=MERCEDES%20TRUCKS&mfcode=3559%20COMM.&clname=KARMINROT/RAL3002&mfmodel=&stcode=CG256

Selecting one of the "stock code CG256" hypertext links gives this page, which looks like the color formula for mixing it from Dupont color stocks.

http://color.dupontrefinish.info/scripts/colorweb.dll/formula?wformdef=51092&v=1&mfname=MERCEDES+TRUCKS&mfcode=3559+COMM.&clname=KARMINROT%2FRAL3002&mfmodel=&stcode=CG256

Awesome.

I'm going to go and verify some of the other G color codes.  Say what you want about Dupont paint quality, just knowing how to get the color formula for G paints in an easy to obtain paint here in the USA is worth a lot to me.  I'll try and do a more thorough treatment to help others in the future (finding how PPG does it, for instance)

Thanks again for all your help!

RE: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

The Dupont pages were more understandable, I could look up on color names, model, car manufacturer and color codes.

You probably already know that the bumper and front grille, etc is RAL7167, TIEFDUNKELGRAU?

RE: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

Thanks man!  Hopefully this'll be helpful to others.  Dupont is pretty widely known here.  This shop I'm working with now does mostly Sherwin Williams, but as soon as I started talking about Dupont numbers, they were all over it, as I think most places would be.  We're lucky that the Dupont site is pretty easy to deal with.

Thanks again for all your help.  I should probably pick up some of that dark grey too.  Doing the bumpers and grille would really spruce it up.  They take a lot of rocks here in Colorado.

Re: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

I have been using Seymour MRO flat black on the grill, bumpers and trim. It is probably the best rattlecan paint I have ever used. I was going to powder coat the front end parts but my area is some sort of rock chip hell. Using this stuff I can repaint it when I have the time myself and it is outstanding at covering problems. It dries thoroughly and the results look professional. I did some of the upper trim at the gutter and the paint match with the original is super close. It holds up great over time. This reminds me that I have to take the rear view mirror mount on the passenger door off and paint it to match the driver door mount I did a while back. Makes the other one look really bad now.

Great info and links on this thread. Thanks for asking the right questions Dave.

RE: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

I'm having a hell of a time coming up with the Dupont equivalent to my '82 white color, 9001.

My paint guys are guessing it's DB737 classic white. There's no reference to 9001.

I've tried 001 and it doesn't work.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Re: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

Steve in my sales brochure for the 1983 model year the Classic White 737 is the only bright white. I bet that is what your G has on it. The only close other color is light ivory 623 and that is a little warmer moving to a light beige. Not your paint. MB was pretty clear about the paint in those years. My anthracite gray is code 172 in this brocure and the code on my G is 7172 for some reason. I have no idea what your code means. Black in this brochure is 040 the closest code. See if you can get a 737 chip and see if it is a match to your interior paint or inner door paint that hasn't seen much sun. A BASF shop will have that chip in exact match. Glasurit or Diamont are the BASF brands.

RE: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

As always, thanks Dai. I think you're right and that's probably the direction we're headed.

Would love to know if anyone has succeeded in confirming the cross over.

Re: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

Not sure if the paint has been mixed at all, but when I first bought my G there were a few rust bubbles starting to form around the rocker panels and a dent on the rear corner of the truck. My body shop guy ( a good buddy) fixed everything and then they resprayed the lower portion of the truck. I've never been able to tell there has been repainting and no one has ever said anything. I took a look at the paint can at home as they gave me the left over and the shop used PPG Deltron DBU with "#1" written on it.

I'm going to ass-u-me that #1 is a white color. Perhaps, since Deltron DBU was introduced to the paint markets in 1984, this would make sense? Not sure beyond that but if you want the can of paint, I'm willing to hand it over if they can do analysis or something and figure out what it matches up to, or if someone can cross reference Deltron DBU #1 and figure out across different paint manufacturers if it's a standard color. sorry I can't be of more help.

Follow up

I spoke to my buddy briefly and he told me that one of his guys reversed engineered the paint code based upon a color number they found either on the truck or in one of the manuals/paraphenalia they found in the truck. He will ask his guy who worked on my truck to see if he remembers how they did it as the guy is off today. I do remember that they spent about a week on the phone with the paint manufacturers and Germany trying to get the paint code deciphered.

My 1980 is code 9001 (unkwon on epc data card) , the new MB brochure white code is 960 or 7960 , its a non methalic , i am going to buy a small quantitie and spray a piece of metal to see if its ok for me. I am thinking to use white roof on my 300GD , but with barn doors i dont like white so it will be greey 7368 ( i am going to methalic) with white tropical roof.

RE: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

Steve the RAL is the European standardardization ( or something to that effect).  Here is a chart showing the RAL colors (yours is there too).  I would think any good paintshop could cough up this list and cross reference them.  My paintshop here looked at me funny too, until I pointed it out to the old bearded guy in the back who brought out some old dusty book...and than mixed my RAL 3002 paint.

Re: "Trick" to G paint color codes?

Just as Mike (D-Star) just referenced, buddy called me back. He spoke with his guy and I guess he (worker) and the guys on the other end of the line (Europe) recognized the RAL 9001 code or something and then they cross referenced it with an old paint chart and just used a PPG product that was the same. His guy said it was a standard paint color (standard white) mixture(?) that lots of manufacturers used and paint makers made.
