PLEASE Help, Engine in protection mode?

On my way home I was pushing hard when suddenly the engine started misbehaving. Firstly I noticed that the 'dip' in power at around 3500rpm and again at 4500rpm that the engine has always had became FAR more pronounced- to the extent that the engine battled to rev past 4500rpm, soon thereafter the dreaded engine protection mode kicked in again.. for the rest of the trip the car would only accelerate gradually and if the revs picked up past 3000rpm the engine limited the power. If I pushed too hard on the accelerator, car actually slows down!!

Is this the knock sensors again?? Once i turn the vehicle off and restart, the engine will again rev freely until I get out on the road and rev it up past 4500rpm, then this happens all over again!!

Help!

RE: PLEASE Help, Engine in protection mode?

Took it to the dealer, yup, seems its the MAF. So I unplugged it.. WOW
The car has never gone Better ?!?!?!?!?

So, besides the obvious (L/100km and accurate fuel mixture) is there any point in replacing it?? At the moment the vehicle is going FAR better than ANY other ML430 i have driven!!! WITHOUT the MAF plugged in!! What damage can this cause, I calculated that it would take 50 000km for a new sensor to pay for itself (Fuel saving cost) but I only do 10 000km a year!! that's 5 years worth!!

PS.. the 'Lazy feel' that I have been complaining about is gone

Any ideas on how to fix the MAF, any ideas??

Thanks Gary

RE: PLEASE Help, Engine in protection mode?

You only need to replace a MAF if a CEL light is on and diagnostic codes will be PO170 and PO173

Courtesy Wolfgang:

http://www.germanstar.net/163f.htm

According to this web site, the MAF INSERTS are of only one type, "112", for BOTH ML320 and ML430 where the complete MAF assembly has 112 and 113, respectively, for the 320 and 430.

When ordering ask Germanstar about it. I also assumed the two Mercedes part numbers are different electrically, but when looking them up in this cross reference guide, they both lead to the same insert WAM007.

112 094 00 48 -> WAM007
113 094 00 48 -> WAM007

@designo? I believe the MAF is a Wheatstone bridge.

Some Bosch HFM specs are here:

http://www.boschmotorsandcontrols.co.uk/sensoren/sensoren.pdf#page=...

The diameter for the M112 is smaller than for the M113, which could explain the difference and would also result in different electric outputs...
Inner "Venturi nozzle" diameters:
W113 - 3 in.
W112 - 2 3/4 in.

Otherwise, everything else looks the same. Knowing that BOTH engines (6 cyl. and 8 cyl.) use the same MAF Insert leads me to think that the Insert is inter-changable between the two housings and the the only difference between them is the air-intake openings. Well, the V8's needs more air so the the W113's have a bigger opening, sounds logical.

ALL Mercede models (cars and trucks) use the same sensor.

Expressed in millimeters those numbers are roughly:

M112 - V6 - 70 mm - 600 kg of air per hour
M113 - V8 - 76 mm - 800 kg of air per hour

100 kg of air per cylinder per hour, regardless of V6 or V8.

RE: PLEASE Help, Engine in protection mode?

Thank you all for such a comprehensive reply.

I pulled the MAF, and it was spotlessly clean.. So I decided to strip it and see if I could find the fault (It wasn't working anyway!)

THERE ARE NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE THE UNIT!! -REALLY!!

1. I removed the sensor part from the housing.
2. I removed the top cover of the sensor (by removing the rubber seal around the top edges with a stanley knife).
3. Inside was a complete electronic circuit!!
4. On the input side were several thin wires, with a PCB in the middle (With micro processor chip!) and EXTREMELEY Fine wires leading out to the "sensor" Part all covered in a clear silicone gell.
5. I could see the fault of the sensor throught the silicone gell seal. One of the micro fine wires onto the center chip was touching another wire.
6. I tried to remove the gel to get to the chip, but the gel is soooo soft and the wires on the chip sooo delicate that soon enough all the wires were a mess and unit completely destroyed.
7. I cut off the part protuding into the air flow and checked for insulation between input wires and replaced for now

This isn't just a sensor, it is a full Microprocessor controlled measuring unit. I can see why they cost soo much, but have to ask if it is all worth it??
It was impossible to repair and I ended up destroying the entire unit.

Has anyone bought from http://www.importeccatalog.com/ are they reliable, the price seems very good :

RE: PLEASE Help, Engine in protection mode?

:) ..... wanted to make sure no other info on this old subject was missing .... maybe some links to wolfgangs site is still mising?.....

might have to copy this up to the useful info sticky section ......

PS: There are some real old chararacters on this forum moved over from the original bunch on BW.

I don't frequent this so often now that I have a white R230 AMG also. As per usual I am already fixing (broken ashtray) this one also.

ALmost pulled everything apart on the W163. Most famous one was the documented transmission exchange!.....

FWIW:

well, my truck ran real nice with the MAF unplugged. didnt even get a 'check wallet' light. idled particularly smoothly. she must default to some preset fuel/spark/rpm maps, right?

until the next day, and the light came on at start-up. still ran ok, but call me a coward, the check wallet light worries me. so, i plugged it back in, disc batt 10 mins, no more idiot light.

RE: PLEASE Help, Engine in protection mode?

Well my MAF has FINALLY arrived.. Now..

So do I disconnect the battery and install and reconnect?? My vehicle doesn't have a 'Check Engine' Light, but I'm sure there are error codes hanging around in the ECU.. How do I re-initiate the system with a working MAF??? Is there an official proper procedure for this installation?? Sorry no OBDII scanner to reset the ECU.. Oh yes I do have the radio code and I've been through the 4ETS reset before

Can't wait....

No need to disconnect battery to install MAF. Your codes will clear themselves after a few start drive cycles- if that was the problem.
