Re: Big day for Peter!!

Now for the BAD NEWS! ...... Dropped the transmission out in 2 hours .... waited in the cosey Austrian Hotel until the next morning for the new Transmission (austrian schnitzel & big beer for dinner) .... When the German dude arrived (delivery in a 2003 W211 Estate) ..... this happened....

1. His exchange transmission has all the design updates to make it the very latest (mine didn't even have a magnet)!...
2. He assumed I still had the old mechanical "push lock" for the PARK setting.... but I already had the electronic controlled version... this meant we had to drop the pan .... and make a quick conversion .......

now all said and done .... in goes the new transmission (very detailed removal/install pics to follow) .....

Put in 4L of transmission fluid (topping up after the test drive - needs to get heated up) .......

Turned on the motor ... DID NOT SHIFT OUT OF DRIVE ...... TEST DRIVE SHOWS IT DOES NOT CHANGE GEARS ..... SDS SHOWS THAT THE N3 Sensor is malfunctioning .....

The brand new parts were defect ..... now we have ordered the parts ... on Monday we will extract the fluid , drop out the ECU , replace the N3 sensor)

I WENT HOME FOR THE WEEKEND!.

Here is 2 pics of the SDS readout after the new transmission is installed. Notice N3 is reading â big fat "0"!!!!

Uah. I believe that N3 uses similar technology as the CPS, which we know are not so reliable...

I think N3 is Y3/6 l1 in this pic:

They should cover this free of charge.

Wolfgang .... Yeah I guess so!

Given access to a Car Lift , pneumatic tools (optional), a long wrench extension, .... I almost believe it to be a DIY!.... especially after my "soon to be published" picture story!. heh,heh .... If the tech moved ... I took a picture!

Ah, so N3 is clearly identified now.

Here's a pic of the electronics in the TCU.

.. so in summary .... I got a defective new transmission delivered ......

Good Lord, what is going on with these transmissions?

Ours was defective also, but it took 8,000 miles to find out. The entire TCU was replaced.
It sat at the dealer for 16 days while they tried to just do one sensor at a time. Finally
they tossed a whole new TCU in and it worked. The part # had the 722.6 and 722.9 designations
after the part number on the RO.
Also it was leaking fluid. The seals for the internal release shift mechanism had failed.
The parts replace for that were:
1) 140-270-01-50 Bushing
1) 140-997-23-45 Seal Ring
1) 140-270-08-05 Cover
1) 140-270-13-65 Shift Linkage
1) 140-990-57-01 Screw
1) 140-997-36-45 Seal Ring
1) 140-991-05-01 Pin
1) 140-278-11-21 Pawl
1) 140-993-08-20 Spring
1) 163-820-31-10 Switch RR Co (backordered for ten days)
4) 001-989-21-03-10 Fluid
1) 140-991-00-55 Lock pin

Then after reading about your brand new defective unit I just have to wonder.
It will be a long time before I am convinced the 7 speed units are up to the
task for the high mileage owners. Time will tell.

Re: Big day for Peter!!

Hmm it must be all units come with a bad TCU. Mine also had a bad one, had to just get one off the dealer, and it was good to go.

RE: Big day for Peter!!

I did not know yours was messed up as well.

When J-bird had her problem it was the TCU and not the trans. I wonder why
all these units for trans replacement have bad TCUs?

It is bad enough losing a transmission, these failing TCUs are like rubbing salt in the wound.

I know tell me about it. The whole transmission thing always has me on my toes. I find myself not trying to gas it as much, or take it off road as much. Much more prevention, and I will just have to stop driving it.
