opening hood full 90 degrees?

On some of the other models, you can do something with the hinges that would allow the hood to be opened a full 90 degrees (or about that much). Can you do this on the ML? If so, how?

The earlier models didn't have the gas cylinders on them. The 99 doesn't but the '02 does. The hood on my 99 opens much higher. You'd have to take the gas cylinders off to do it (better have a 2 x 4 handy!).

I fired off a couple of pics for comparison. You're probably getting 15º more opening from the 99:

Interesting. Oh well. I'm just sick of hitting my head on the hood when I'm working from the sides near the back.

Tell me about it! You're a short asian and I'm a 6'2" Irishman. I bet I have more knots on my head than you do!

RE: opening hood full 90 degrees?

I just noticed that I can unhook the hydraulic hood supports at the 'moving' end and hook it onto another fitting a bit inboard of the normal one which would raise the hood much higher.

This involves removing the circlip, supporting the hood, and re-attaching the hydraulic support to the other fitting which I imagine might be more work than just minding your head.

Or simply wear a hat!

Ahhh, too much work. I read that on some of the other models it only involves pushing a button and the hydraulic supports will go more. I think it also has to do with they way the hood is hinged. On the ML its on a fixed hinge whereas on the others its on some sort double hinge like the passenger wiper type on the other models.

Re: opening hood full 90 degrees?

Hi guys, it’s been a while since I’ve been on the forum – I’ve just been incredibly busy and enjoying the BMW X3 too much to think about the former ML (just kidding – I really miss the ML! )

Anyhow, what Asian is talking about is putting the hood into the “service position” and it’s very easy to do and very helpful. If you look at the hood where the struts are mounted, you will see that on each side, there is an extra ball joint connection behind/below the ones in use. All you have to do is snap the struts off the top ball, raise the hood and then snap them onto the lower ball. This is really quick and easy using a rubber mallet, but you could also (carefully!) use a large screwdriver to pry the strut from the ball.

Of course to do this, you first disconnect one strut, then move the other side and disconnect the other while you support the hood (your hand will do, but some safety-conscious guys will use the genuine MBZ tool or a big stick). Then you raise the hood fully (watch overhead so you don’t bang the hood on your garage ceiling or other obstructions) and snap the struts onto the secondary balls. That’s it!
