If you're going to go with the HID's, you also need to install the levelers on the front and rear suspension - if you want to do it right!

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=61546&posts=5 E-code = European code/specification. For the N.American M-class Bi-Xenons, when the low beam Xenons are off, when you use the flash-to-pass feature, the high beam halogens will illuminate. This is because the Xenons require about 30-60 seconds to warm up and stabilise before they reach full intensity. Usually you only need the flash-to-pass feature for a couple of seconds and hence they are not suitable. When you have the low beam Xenon on, when you use the flash-to-pass feature, the high beam Xenon pattern will be illuminated, however the halogens remain off. When you turn on the high beams, only the high beam Xenon pattern will be illuminated. With the E-code M-class Bi-Xenons, the halogen high beams will illuminated regardless. When you turn on high beams, you essentially get the high beam Xenon HID pattern in addition to the high beam halogens. You can imagine how much more illumination this is, particularly when you take into account that the '02 halogen headlamps only use the flash-to-pass high beams as their only high beam source! scorchie (I've had to send several cars in FOUR TIMES for programming, each time being assured that the bixenon setting was set to "PRESENT" and it wasn't...) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.benzworld.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=33578&posts=21 Drew Here is what Robert Exconde and I came up with way back. Plug: 12 34 56 7 In the original wiring outlay, the low beam wire is in position 1. The retrofit requires that this (low beam) wire be moved to the position 2 OLD: 1 is low beam 4 is the high beam 7 is the ground NEW 2 is low beam (Xenon power) 4 is the high beam 7 is the ground http://www.benzworld.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=25824&posts=19 Birger Euro foglight setting - more on Bi-Xenon internals No, Drew I actually didn't have to do anything - Euro-spec (or at least Belgian-spec) ML's have their foglights (and the AUX circuit) wired so that the foglights can be used with all kinds of lighting, ie. city, lo-beam, and hi-beam. I usually use the FF50's as DRL (this is frowned upon in Germany, but as a matter of fact I translated a proposition for a EU regulation on DRL's a while back, and this allows for foglights used as DRL). With the standard headlamps this has the disadvantage that (like Chris pointed out) the flash-to-pass feature isn't very evident. With 50 cms between the foglights and the hi-beams you note the flashing. As regards the internals of the Bi-Xenons, I think there's a hint to how it can be done in Wolfgang's excellent Bi-Xenon document: '2002 BiXenon internal wiring off halogen H7 bulb 12V--------------o --------o---------------high beam connector high beam shutter 12V------------o || magnet on || +--RELAY--+ | | low beam xenon 12V--------------(---------+--------------low beam connector | ground--------------------------+------------------------ground connector ground low beam------------------------------------------good ground This BiXenon lamp can simply be plugged into the standard 3 pin headlamp wiring harness in the ML. The ML's wiring switches on low beams and switches on the highbeam in addition to the low beams when the high beam is activated. If the low beams are off the relay is in the 'off' position and when turning on the high beam with the 'flash-to-pass' the halogen H7 is turned on. Alternately, if the low beams are on, the relay is in the 'on' position and when activating the high beams the high beam shutter will be activated. It should work fine with DRL, and non-DRL systems. This is as-is with no warranties or guarantees. Unfortunately, it's not done just by disconnecting the wire between the low beam supply and the relay - in that way you will obtain halogen-only high beams, which is not the idea! - but I still think that it might be easier just to hook up an external relay feeding off the hi-beam wire on the adapter. Hopefully, we'll see later this week ;-) Birger http://www.whnet.com/4x4/bixenon.txt M-Class BiXenon Headlights Circuit diagram Mercedes M-Class 2002 BiXenon headlight internal wiring ======================================================= high beam shutter motor 12V-------------------------+ | off | halogen H7 bulb 12V---white--o | ------------o---white--+-----high beam connector --o || on || || +--RELAY--+ | | brown yellow | | xenon ballast 12V--------------(----------+---------------low beam connector | xenon ballast/relay ground------+-------------------------ground connector 1 shutter/H7 ground-----------------------------------------ground connector 2 12V DC leveling motor ---------------------------------- \ | 12V DC leveling motor ---------------------------------- | | | to dynamic leveling } contoller under the position sensing pot. +-------------------------------- | dash on the | | driver's side position sensing pot. \-(var)-------------------------- | | | position sensing pot. +-------------------------------- / This BiXenon lamp can simply be plugged into the standard 3 pin headlamp wiring harness in the ML (some pins may have to be relocated, depending on version, model year, prior mods etc; or adapter harness). The ML's wiring switches on low beams and switches on the high beam thusly: A - If the low beams are OFF when turning the high beams on with "flash-to-pass" stalk the halogen H7 is turned on. B - Alternately, if the low beams are ON when activating the high beams the halogen H7 will not be turned on; unless modified by bypassing the relay, pulling off the two white wires, and connecting them. Installing Bi-Xenon Headlights on 2003 MY ML by Andy Fracica http://www.benzworld.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=17172&posts=10 Birger Headlamp wiring - and a city light tip Hi, over the past weekend the weather was good enough to get a closer look at the wiring leading to the headlamps of my 270 CDI, and at least the colors to the main plug exactly match what Wolfgang describes in his document www.whnet.com/4x4/bixenon.txt, that is: Eight position connector with two rows of four ============================================== pin A pink wire low beam pin B orange wire range adjustment motor pin C blue wire range adjustment motor pin D - not used pin E tan wire ground pin F blue marker lamp (sometimes called city lights) pin G white high beam pin H gray foglamp I also got a couple of closeup photos, but have not yet had the time to upload them (slow connection at home, and NT here at work = no USB compatibility :-( - maybe tonight I'll get around to it). However, I'm a little puzzled as to the smaller connector. As you can see from the accompanying photo, I also have three wires leading to this connector; one pink, one green, and one tan. This is a little different from Wolfgang's document: Three position connector with single row of three ================================================= pin A tan wire ground pin B blue wire standing/parking lamp pin C green wire turn signal lamp As you know over here the orange turn indicator bulb has only one filament - I wonder why we still have three wires leading to this connector. Unfortunately the weather did not permit me to perform any testing with a multimeter to see which of those wires actually carry any current. To those of you who are considering adding European city lights, but worry about actually drilling into the reflector itself: An alternative placement of the small W5W bulb could be somewhere in the chromed 'extension' of the hi-beam reflector. Of course the effect will not be exactly the same, but it would be feasible, and you would not touch the reflector itself (I've seen it done on NA-specification cars over here). And instead of drilling, as this piece is 'ordinary' plastic, you might consider carefully melting a hole with a small soldering iron - in that way avoiding that something falls into the reflector. To avoid fumes from staining the reflector, use a vacuum cleaner while heating through the plastic. Drive safely everyone, Birger PS: I'm still considering getting the NA-spec Bi-Xenons from PP if I can get this pinout question solved..... Orange side lamps are as exotic over here as city lights in the US ;-) Attachments ---------------- BenzworldInfo.pdf (667KB - 14 downloads)

I installed E-code bi-xenons on my 2001 ML. It is a very easy thing to do WITHOUT the adapters - all it requires is: 1. Buy a set of bi-xenons for 400-600EUR on ebay.de 2. Inside the headlights, connect the two brown grounds at positions A and E together (the bi-xenon has two ground circuits and your 2000 lights have one). 3. Move around the pins on the headlight connector in the headlights to match the wiring in your 2000 ML; that part is pretty easy once you know the differences in the wiring (see below - that's what I worked from. Your father's wiring may look slightly different so verify first). 4. Install the lights and you are away. Two points come to mind here. Firstly the bi-xenons have 2 ground connectors in the 2002+ wiring loom, which are then fed into the single ground in the pre-2002 wiring via the wiring adapters purchased from PP or modified in the bi-xenon itself. Secondly, older ML's needed a fuse upgrade from standard 7.5A for the bi-xenons to not go down. just did 04 Bi-Xenons on my 2000 ML. The new Benz assemblies were $850. No adapters needed here. I made a slight change by moving a pin in the new bi-xenon and then made two easily reversable wiring changes in the harness behind the light assembly. They work great. It is the difference between nite and day. We have the xenons in our E Class and have enjoyed them a lot at nite.
I have a 2003 ML350 Inspiration with the halogen headlight assemblies. I ordered and received the Performance Products model year 2002 Bi-Xenon headlight upgrade. From what I can tell from a purely visual inspection, the Hella Bi-Xenon assemblies are direct replacements for the halogen assemblies. So, I have a couple of questions....
Congrats on your new vehicle and welcome to the forum. Regarding the Bi-Xenons, the problem has to do with version coding with the computer modules. Only MLs with factory installed Xenons have the necessary computer settings to allow the Bi-Xenons to function properly. Since the modules are ordered by VIN, they are coded by the factory and hence the dealers have no idea which settings have to be changed in order to have the lights functional.
Thanks for the welcome.... this is a great place to unearth info. Regarding the dealers, I'm getting my dealer (ParkPlace here in Dallas) to check their info tomorrow. I did some investigation this afternoon, looking for the wiring for the Auto-Level feature. There is a fuse in position F23 called "Dynamic Beam Control". It's a 15 amp fuse, and I'm guessing that this is for the auto-level feature. If I could get my hands on a factory wiring diagram for the 03 ML350, I bet I could figure out the wiring requirements. ...is indeed the auto-leveling system. However, it is not something that you want to retrofit because of the massive costs involved. You need to run new wiring from the axles, and a couple more expensive control units and sensors. As such, you don't really need a wiring diagram afterall. Well, I spent an hour at Park Place-Dallas today talking with the Service Tech Supervisor. When I explained to him what I was wanting, he fired up his browser and went to the internal MB site and was all set to download the wiring diagrams for the halogen and Bi-Xenon 03 ML models. Then he discovered that he didn't have a web plug-in to display the diagram. He is downloading that and will print them off for me tomorrow. Just so you know, there are four separate wiring diagrams for the headlight setups. One for regular ML and AMG ML's with halogen and one for regular ML's and AMG ML's with Bi-Xenon. One step closer perhaps. There is also a wiring diagram for the auto-level features, but I dont know if that also includes the part numbers for harnesses, control units, sensors, etc... Why don't you ask your Hella rep to point his browser to this page. I wonder if he go the memo? Hi Toby, (Scochie) I removed my halogen assembly and compared it to the Performance Products Bi-Xenon assembly. On the left assembly, here's what the wiring looks like... Headlight Assembly TOP Ground-BR OPEN High-WH OPEN OPEN OPEN Low-YE Ground-BR Performance Products Adpater Cable (part 82-667) The PP adapter harness was wired as follows (the letters preceding the description are imprinted on the plug itself): TOP - Plugs into the assembly E-BR (Ground) D-OPEN F-WH (High) C-OPEN G-OPEN B-OPEN H-GR (Low) A-BR (Ground) TOP - Plugs into the vehicle's harness E-BR (Ground) D-OPEN F-OPEN C-OPEN G-WH (High) B-OPEN H-OPEN A-GR (Low) The wiring harness on my 2003 ML350 with stock halogen lights is wired as follows (this is the main harness and not the 3-wire side-marker light harness): Vehicle Wiring Harness TOP E-BR (Ground) D-OPEN F-WH (High) C-OPEN G-BL (???) B-OPEN H-Pink (Low) A-OPEN As you can see, the PP adapter is wired incorrectly where it plugs into the vehicle harness. Position A on the PP adapter plugging into the harness should be OPEN, Position F should have the WHite wire originally found in position G, Position G should be OPEN and Position H should have the GRay wire (relocated from position A). I moved the pins around on the plug of the adapter and plugged the lights up and up came the Bi-Xenons! Followed the same logic on the right side and had Bi-Xenons on both sides! Low and High beams both work and light up just fine. But wait! Two steps forward..... now for that d*mn step backward.... Once I started the car, it appears that the control modules are managing the power output on the wire to the low beams because I got a dimming and then both lights began to flicker. Same is true for high beams. Once I turned the engine off, full light function was restored. So, the next question is ........ Is there a collective opinion that updating the control module will address the flicker/apparent low voltage to the unit issue? I'm going by the dealer tomorrow morning to get their opinion, but I wanted to check with the real experts first. Any and all input appreciated. Toby A final update...... SUCCESS! Visited Park Place here in Dallas this morning. The Service Supervisor knew exactly which control unit to modify. He indicated that the control unit does manage the current differently on the wire when halogens are installed. Once the control unit was changed from the "Halogen" option to the "Xenon" option, the lights worked just like they were from the factory (without the auto-level feature). So, if you have a 2003 ML with the halogens and want to upgrade to the Performance Products Bi-Xenon assemblies, you will need the following from PP: 82-670A and 82-671A - Bi-Xenon assemblies 82-667 - Pigtail adapter (you need two of these) Be aware that the adapter is NOT wired correctly when you get it from PP. You must make the swaps noted in my prior post to get the adapter to line up with the vehicle's harness. My thanks to those of you who volunteered opinions and suggestions to make this install successful. Now if I can just get ONE part number for the auto-level setup, I can back-track for the whole shebang and see about installing that setup as well. Thanks again. Toby Other places like www.autolamps-online.com have good kits also a friend of mine told me that the XENON bulbs need a time of 2 seconds to activate. So for the high beams if you want to make a warning signal you have this delay of 2 seconds. Is it true? That is why the Bi-Xenons have halogen flash-to-pass high beams when your Xenons are not on. Therefore you don't have that problem. The group buy at Performance Products caught my attention because they were coming in with 2002 bi-Xenons for a very good price ($1100). Remember, you could get Xenons with the 2001 light set as a factory option, but it was only one beam and you had to buy the sport package as an option, which I didn't want. The PP package included a set of adapters to make the 2002 assemblies work with 2001 and earlier models. Firstly, sorry to hear of the broken tab. Hella improved the packaging + PP added even more, so I was hopeful that they would be okay this time. you have the euro spec bi-xenons where the halogen hi-beams light up in addition to the low beam xenon regardless if the low beams are on or off. I guess DOT thought both hi-beams on at the same time were an overkill. Anyway the hi-beam xenons are bright enough. have a European version headlamp (includes the daytime running lamp with the white side marker) and with the pigtail adapter the halogens turn on whenever the the high beams are activated. However, your answer makes 110% sense because the Xenon light overpowers the halogen when they are both lit and it does not make sense to have the halogens on at the same time. Thanks for clearing this up. What a relief!!! So I guess the wiring layout for my other light is different than the US w/o the DTL. However for anyone considering the Bi-Xenon's in my opinion they are a must do upgrade. I cannot believe how bright and clear these lamps are. My wife was impressed!!!!!! They also look very nice. If I'm standing in front of the vehicle with the driver's side Bi-Xenon the right hand side adjustment screw does what (up/down or left/right)? and I'll guess that the other does what's left after the above is answered? No Drew they do not. They are the US versions w/o the Daytime Running Lamps and w/o the white reflector. E-code lamps can actually be used in a few states in the US. The truth is that your average motorist or police officer won't be able to tell the difference. E-code lamps are legal throughout Canada. About 4 months ago when I had the US spec bi-xenons, when I flashed people they got confused a little and didn't know whether they should go or not (if i was letting them turn onto a side street). With the E-Code bi-xenons now, it's more noticeable that you are highbeaming because of the halogens. Plus when you are on a dark road, the halogens light up about 3 times the distance as the bi-xenons believe it or not. I'll take some pictures tomorrow night and post them. Some time back, there was a bit of dicussion regarding the low-beam pattern of the Bi-Xenons. Over here, the low-beam pattern is the same on all models: __/ - that is, to the left of center it's flat (or nearly so), and to the right of center it rises, quite sharply even. As someone put it, this allows for illumination of road signs etc., while at the same time minimizing dazzling of oncoming drivers. The downside of it is that you might dazzle other drivers crossed in right-hand bends, but it's very brief. I did serious consider the flash-to-pass issue too, and discussed it with others such as Wolfgang. Yes, the headlamp washers and auto leveling ought to work fine. It is not the auto leveling mechanism that you have to worry about since that is integrated into the headlamps, but rather the plugs and pinouts that have to be compatible. Mercedes can't give the approval code to you, because they would need to obtain a new 'type approval' from the Bundesverkehrsministerium, which covers the retrofit of Bi-Xenons in previous year MLs. The type approval they have specifically covers installation of Bi-Xenons in new MLs, and all units which are series-produced and assigned an approval symbol, usually shown in the glass, must conform in all respects to the approved unit. You will need to prove that installation in previous year MLs is identical to new MLs in all respects in order to use the Mercedes type approval, which will be difficult. Therefore an individual approval is the way to go. Or contact the BVM to have the law changed :-) These last weeks rather intense investigations in the Bi-Xenon upgrade have led me to the conclusion that the ML's wiring harnesses are to a great extent the same, regardless where the truck is to be used - only some parts are not used in certain locations. just for your info the '02 halogens from PP do not the range adjuster motor in the headlamps, but on the '02 halogen (euro spec) there is a third plug which I assume that you can plug in the harness for the range adjuster. The plug is different from what is on the bi-xenons where it is an auto leveling system. I don't know if these two systems are compatible meaning if you plug in the harness for the manual adjustment it will work on the bi-xenons. I'll post pics for comparisons. Here is the rear of the '02 halogen projectors (euro spec) you will notice the third plug for the range adjustment. Notice that the plug is smaller than the ones on the bi-xenons. Also in the euro lights the headlamp harness utilize four pins, one more than the US lights. The additional pin is for the city lights.
You don't need the adapters for the 2002 model year. It comes automatically included with the PP BiXenons order.. But I just saw AndyFracica post were he mentions that you may not need to have the adaptors for your ML model. The BiXenons update is one of the most significant updates I have done to my ML since I use them every night. The BiXenon illumination is significantly greater than the OEM halogen headlights. You need to do Drew's high beam wiring update before you install your new BiXenons so that your high beam BiXenon and Halogen beams stay on together when you turn on your high beams. That's a lot of light power.. Thanks Drew for your instructions, they were great... I had to install, too, new PIAA 85x=135w H3 bulbs on my auxiliary Hella lights because the 55w bulbs light output was practically invisible when you have the BiXenons on. Hey Andy.........lf l wanted to put the bi-xenon's in my 99, are they just plug and play with the adapter's.....When l exchanged my older headlight's for the newer light's from PP, they gave me the two adapter's, will they work with the bi-xenon's, or are they different adapter's.............. don't think that I can answer that one conclusively because I have never seen a '99 ML, but I would guess that you could do it if the adapters are designed for the newer lights. The one thing that the Bi-Xenons need is a double ground like I show in the publication. If your adapter provides that, it will work, no problem. If not, you will have to attach the ground wire like I show in the publication.
Here is what I found. The projector assembly was super loose. It flopped around. I took off both covers on the back of the assembly. What I found was that the ball and socket for the verticle adjustment was popped out. I took a hair dryer to get the parts a bit more pliable and then made a hooked tool to pull and pop the ball/socket back together. It worked perfectly. I then set up my screen at nite and aligned the two headlamps perfectly. The new light is unbelievable. My guess is that the assembly was not correctly assembled from the Benz or Hella factory. I did notice that the adjustment has positive stops at both ends so it cannot come loose by too much turning. It took a good bit of work to replace the headlamps in my 2000 ML including a minor wiring change in the Bi-Xenon itself and a minor wiring change in the ML harness. It is easily changable back to original. The guys at mercedesbenzparts.com were great and I would buy from them anytime. I did get them on Ebay from their store. The price turned out to be almost unbelievable in the end due to a slight bit of shipping damage which was easily repaired. If anyone needs help doing this, I would be glad to give more details on the entire experience. Like I said, the new amount and quality of light was well worth every penny. 1998-2001 without HID is wired as follows (colors listed are for the WIRING HARNESS OF THE VEHICLE):
