Power Steering Pump Fluid Reservoir

My reservoir is leaking on the 2002 ML320. I know it's probably not rocket science but has anyone installed one? It looks like one torx and an o-ring plug in. The reservoir was $28.95 shipping and all from Duval Motors.

RE: Power Steering Pump Fluid Reservoir

Do this at your own risk disclaimer.

Don't buy the reservoir until you have double checked it. You most likely have a bad o-ring gasket. Go to a dealer and buy this gasket approx less than $3.00 and while you're there might as well buy an MB power steering fluid about $15.00. Use the MB fluid.

Here was the steps I got from one of the forum:

1. Remove plasic engine cover (snaps off)
2. Unscrew and remove ps dipstick.
***** I use my Mitavac to get the PS fluid out.
3. Place absorbent towels directly underneath the pump and resevoir.
4. From front of engine remove the retaining bolt.(Only one is used)
5. From side of resevoir, in the area of the seal (closest to the E-box) using a small hook to pull out a retaining U shaped clip.
***** This is the portion that took me awhile to figure out how to get it out. Use a flat nose screw driver and needle nosed plier. You can insert first the tip of the flat nose screwdrive on the retaining bolt as it is U-shape. Use the plier as leverage to pull it out halfway with enough force. Once it is out halfway you can then use the pliers to take it out. Be careful not to drop it as it would be a pain to find it.

6. The resevoir is now unsecured and can be pulled back (towards the radiator).
****Make sure you unscrew the output hose from the reservoir and to make sure that the hose is pointing upwards and and secured.
7. Clean the area and the resevoir. Do not let any dirt enter the pump or resevoir. Check for cracks in the resevoir and replace if needed. ($30. Part)
8. Remove and replace the O-ring.
****Check that bloody darn little thing that was giving you grief. Compare the old from the new gasket and you should see the difference.
9. Reinstall the resevoir on the pump making sure that the seal sits squarely. Press the retaining clip back on.
***press hard with the pliers.
10. Reinstall the retaining bolt and tourque to specification.
****I would advise on using a permatex threadlocker blue to lock in the bolt.
11. Fill the resevoir with the MB ps fluid.
12. Check for leaks.
13. Adjust the fluid to proper level.
14. Re install the engine cover (try not to break off the plastic mounting points)

The job should take no more than 15-20 minutes.

I did this and no more leak.

RE: Power Steering Pump Fluid Reservoir

I failed to mention mine is cracked. I probably could have epoxied it but I feel more comfortable with a new one. It was just $28.00.

RE: Power Steering Pump Fluid Reservoir

I just ordered another reservoir tank, this time for the 99ML430. I'm certain the leak on this one is coming from the O-ring BUT the way I figure it, it would be a bummer to take off this tank, replace O-ring only to find out it's cracked, too.
