Fluids and capacities for a W163 ML320

Hello all,

I am not very knowledgeable in servicing my wife's newly acquired W163 ML320. The car has been regularly serviced by MB garage here in Spain, but as usual a former owner had to have the auto gearbox replaced due to lack of proper maintenance. I normally do the servicing to my other cars.

I am determined to prevent any other problems with the ML and would like to change the front and rear differential fluids plus the one in the transfer box, but I don't know about capacities dna quailities of the fluids needed and I was wondering if anyone could pass me this information (or any other regarding non-MB scheduled preventative maintenance for a W163).

Many thanks in advance.

Hello Mortinson, congratulation to your 'new' ML.

Here's an article from the Mercedes-Benz Club of America club magazine which appeared a few years ago, as a start..

Oh, horrors! Is that a pic of a guy putting Castrol in an MB engine??? Perish the thought.

RE: Fluids and capacities for a W163 ML320

Just a curiosity... the filling and emptying plugs for the transfer case fluid can only be done with a 3/8" square drive rachet! In a Mercedes! This is almost sacrilegious. Yes, I know the ML is made stateside but it is a Merc nonetheless! It is obviously impossible to find US-metric tools in Spain so I had to buy a 10 mm square drive rachet and have it carefully filed to measure the 3/8".

Ingenuity to power!

Thanks again guys!
