ML Falling apart once again!

I have 2 mercs!. One for when the other one is being repaired.

The latest from my beloved POS:

Losing oil, Air & Bad whining coming from the engine? .....,  window switches (beyond the rudney repair trick!, Front Xenon Light blown, Heating no longer working, )

..... Now coming up is the usual wear and tear  on top of that ..... brakes, suspension, tie rods, diff oil change, etc....

PS: It's at the dealer for damage inspection at the moment. There isn't anything I have had to repair on that truck!.  .... including a new tranmission!.

Next SUV is certainly not a US Merc!. I'm going for a cayenne, Land Cruiser, or VW.

At the moment I get the feeling I got to pay the junkyard to take the thing off my hands.

.... oh forgot to say I also got the good ol "fuel guage" problem ...... New one of those pumps soon too ....  using the KM guage to decide when to fill it up!.

I reckon this SUV has been a DIY heaven for consumers!!!!!!!.

RE: ML Falling apart once again!

I am sorry to hear this... but how many miles has your ML? Regarding the transmission it does not surprise me. Mine had to have it replace at 140.000 Kms because MB no longer advises to change the fluis as it did it the past. I am determined to have my ML serviced as I have my Gs, with regular maintenance for differential- transfer case and main gearbox fluids every 40.000 kms. Preventative maintenance costs peanuts and pays for itself.

And I quite agree with you: anything made by MB after the merger (?) with Chrysler is generally cr@p!

RE: ML Falling apart once again!

Yeah ... well I might just put the ML out to rest until spring ..... then do a general fix it spree..... Wish I lived next door to wolfgang, then I could just let him fiddle with it all day .....

PS: Wish he would buy a R230 ....... Looks like that one is going down the same route..... 1. Vario Roof fixed, 2. Alternator blown, 3. Rear dirvers side window not coming up properly .....    thankfully all fixed now and on warranty .....

One good thing about it so far is that it was fun to see everyone profit from each others experiences..... the transmission swap from MLOFFROAD was funny ..... I am still thinking of him crawling under that ML with my DIY !

Replacing the window switches on friday (when I return from UK). I think I have pulled out the middle console panel more than I have opened the glovebox !  heh,heh .....

My ML has done 256K (KM) .... Transmission blown at around 190K (KM). Even though there is an official fill for life policy from MB, all MB dealers here in germany  are still swapping the tansmission oil at regular intervals.

Hello Pete,

250,000 km on a Brabus ML270CDI? Hmmm. Does this sound like an engine rebuild is due soon? Long-term reliability is usually traded away for performance with these types of chips....

As for choices mentioned so far, Landcruiser and G sound as if they might fit your stable.

Hmmmm. A white 400CDi "G" .... that might just sway me to stay MB ..... certainly not the new GLK .....

heh, heh ... .keep those toons coming....

taleric .... you could get some facelift complete doors (from a junkyard) ..... a mate of mine did that to a 98 ML.

G400 CDI... not good. That's the OM628 DE40 LA made in Marienfelde. Has a bad reputation...

Best current Daimler diesel for LDVs is probably the OM642 DE30 LA. That's what I am driving currently on the Autobahn.

A ML320 CDI with about 9 to 10 liters per 100 kilometers in mixed city/highway driving.

RE: ML Falling apart once again!

Oh! Nice to know .... but why should I be breaking tradition with my current track record? ..... just kidding ..... Still waiting for a report on the ML. The stealer hasn't called me back yet with what is broken with the engine.

RE: ML Falling apart once again!

Pleubner, if you want a reliable, powerful, plentiful and economical (to buy) motor to move your ML get yourself a ML320....

AAAAH  ... asked my stealer what the thing with the 400CDI was about. He said it wass that MB didn't get the design of the V motor right.

RE: ML Falling apart once again!

Got my ML back .... they fixed :-

1. A hose in the bottom of the radiator.

2. The major problem was a leak on both sides of the CAT which is in front of the turbo. Exhaust fumes in the motor area under the bonnet, terrible whining noise.

3. Heating no longer working

4. Replaced my window switches (just bacuse they couldn't get the window back up after leaving it outside after servicing.... I was going to do it when I picked up the trûck ..... switch block cost 100 Euros , replacement 6 Euros)

"TURBOLADER UND LUFTFILTER PRUEFE, ABGASE IM MOTORAUM, VORKAT ZUM TURBOLADER UNDICHT"

"KUEHLMITTELSCHLAUCH DER MOTORKUEHLUNG, ORTSANGABE: KUEHLER UNTEN ZUR WASSERPUMPE ERNEUERN"

"KUEHL UND HEIZSYSTEM AUF DICHTHEIT PREUFEN"

"DEFEKTE SICHERUNG DER MOTORSTEUERUNG ERNEUERN"

..... Well 1000 Euros later my truck is running again!.  (300 Euros = Parts, 500 Euros = Labour).

PS: Very friendly stealer (Loerrach, Germany) .... Will call me each time they are repairing ML's, and will let me watch the mechanics. .....
