MB dealer screw up?

I had my G in local dealer to have my auto trans shifting problem checked out... mistake #1. I figured I would get my oil change done at same time...mistake #2 They couldn't figure out my shifting problem, they refered me to a local trans shop and didn't charge me for looking at it. Good? Wait there's more...the service guy tells me he didn't notice any shifting problems while road testing it, however before they road tested that they had to drain some oil out of the trans after it was lube/serviced; as it was over full. I found that strange because I check it myself several times in the past, (hot in neutral while idling), and it was fine. I didn't give what he said much thought at the time. However, on the way home the G idled rough and felt down on power, like I was towing a trailer. I had a look at the MB bill more closely when I got home to see if they did anything other work that the didn't tell me. Then I saw it...G500 typed on the top of bill and a charge for 9.5 liters of oil!!!! Then what the service guy said about too much oil made sense, only it wasn't the tranny... I think they over filled my engine! ( 280GE with M110 takes 6-7 liters, right?) I just checked and the engine's oil is between the dipstick marks, so I guess if they did over fill it they drained the extra out. Does anyone know what too much oil (maybe 3liters too much) would do to my engine. I think something would give and it's not gona be the oil. I would think that the oil would blow out of crankcase breather or dipstick tube before bending engine parts? Maybe I'm just panicking over nothing, but it doesn't run the same that's for sure; I had to turn the idle screw 1/2 a turn so that it wouldn't stall. Maybe it's not the right oil also? It says ENGOIL 000 300 motor on the receipt. Anybody know what the viscosity of this oil is? Also is there 9.5 liters in a G500? Any thoughts would be helpful, Bern.

RE: MB dealer screw up?

The 113 engine takes between 8.0 - 8.5 liters.

Premature death of G wagens is guaranteed by a visit to a DEALER. Run to your local independent. I speak from vast and expensive experience.

RE: MB dealer screw up?

The biggest danger from over-full engine oil is that the crank starts hitting the oil and "whips" it into a froth trapping air in the oil.  Aerated oil won't maintain the hydrostatic cushion that you need in plain bearings to keep the crank off the journals and rods off the crank.  If you pulled the dipstick and it looked foamy or cloudy, you might have a worry.  If it just looks like regular oil, then it wasn't full enough to foul the crank and no damage was done.  Since the G is designed to work at extreme up and down angles which would raise the oil level a LOT in one end of the sump, my guess is that you can't approach that with a few liters overfill while driving the car on level streets.

My guess on engoil 000 300 is that it's 0w30 oil.  Maybe right for M113(don't know), but definitely way too light for the M110.  It needs 10w40 in cold weather and 20w50 in hot.  Call the dealer and get them to tell you which viscosity grade they used.

And never, ever go back there for service.  If they think your truck is a G 500, or that it needs to be treated the same way, they're idiots and don't deserve your hard earned cash.

RE: MB dealer screw up?

Thanks for the info Dave, I feel alot better knowing that the engine is most likely undamaged. I will ask them what kind of oil they used on Monday when I go back there; I want to cool down over the weekend. They are going to get an ear full, even if the G is ok, because they over charged me for the oil. The thieves owe me 2 1/2 liters of oil or the money back, also I'm going to make them put in the proper viscosity; if it's not right. Bern
