| G-AMG G-Class DIY Host Date registered: May 2006 Location: South Texas Vehicle(s): '04 G55, '80 280GE, '99 S420, '98 E320, 2011 E350  | ESOTERIC PHOTO DIY- BRAKE LINE AND HOSE REPLACEMENT Ok, I know this is a bit "esoteric", but since I was doing the work, why not snap a few photos.... While doing my Calipers, I had a "closer" look at the brake system. Well, up above the front axle (kind of hidden from view" were some twisted/mangled brake pipes. It looks like something scraped up along the axle and caught the brake pipes. Granted, I've never felt any asymmetric braking symptoms, I felt more comfortable just changing the two pipes out..... BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The pipe change was hell! First, one would think when you order a new pipe after view what it looks like on EPC, that the tube would LOOK like the EPC?? Ooooooohhhh, no! Straight pipe!! (And to be perfectly honest, I think the replacement pipe was a tad LONGER than the old one. So I spent a whole day, trying to exactly replicate the curves, jogs and twists of the two pipes which I meticulously dissected out en bloc, so as to keep the exact course. Easier said than done!! There are soooo many turns, and soooo many obstructions to get caught onto on the way out... The other hellish chore was prising the metal/rubber fixating "clamp" which sits on top of the left longitudinal frame, and just medial to the steering shaft. It took nearly a half a day to both open, and close that bugger. There is zero room. This clamp was critical, because this section of the pipe runs underneath the steering shaft, and must be kept safely clear of the steering system, for obvious reasons. The other project/SNAFU was trying to remove the Caliper Pipe to Caliper "Nut". The previous monkey completely stripped the nut, which required complete destruction to remove it. So I had to repair that. I used one of the fittings off of the bent pipes mentioned above. One big note on this repair...... DON'T FORGET TO PUT THE NUT ONTO THE PIPE "BEFORE" YOU FLARE THE END..... HA HA! (I'm laughing at myself.... ALMOST did it Hee Heee) By the way, the G uses a "Type F" flare. The "third" portion of the post is replacing my "tired" looking Rubber Brake hoses. Yes, I know I "might" have placed them kidywhompus, but MY theory was: "the distal part of the hose, near the wheel, is undergoing more 'longitudinal torsion' than the upper part which runs vertically, and up in the engine bay." THis is why I placed the "beefed up" thick end of the hose LOWER. And NO the old hoses were the same size throughout, and I checked the G55, and all your nice pics from your Graz trip, and.... the NEW G's have TWO "thick" ends... Oh, I DID check into "Goodridge??" braided steel hoses. There USED to be a guy on UK Ebay who sold them, but I can't seem to find him.. I also checked with their USA division in Cali, but they had NO idea what I was talking about.. "A G??" Sooo, I ended up with OEM FTE/(FAG) Hoses. Of course, you need to bleed the brake system when you are done......and check for any leaks.... Anyway, just a job to file away into some trivia oblivion....
