What is the correct size, and what is the best drive for it 1/4" or 3/8"..... BTW The part was provided to me by an indie parts supplier under $90.00! I think Dutch posted on the other forum with some details regarding size. I bought mine off e-bay for ~$60. It is a common part that all the MB 5.0 use. Geo

Add a 1/4" universal joint between the Torx socket and the long extension; and a magnetic retriever will help you catch the screw.

prbmeat Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool I just ordered the CPS and the correct tool(s) for install. If all goes smooth, how long should this take? It looks like the trick is being able to capture the screw once removed ... We'll see ... Edited by prbmeat 4/12/2011 2:23 PM

prbmeat Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: Crankshaft Position Sensor - removal tool I used the E8 torx with 14" 1/4" extension on 1/4" ratchet. I was able to remove the bolt without dropping it ... but when replacing the bolt (just to be careful) I used some painters tape to hold the bolt to the E8 torx so I wouldnt't drop it (it secures it nicely but pulls away just as easy once inserted) ... worked perfectly. Note: It tool me longer to actually find the CPS than it did to replace it, once found ... Regards, The Meat Edited by prbmeat 4/19/2011 12:16 PM

The magnet trick worked great. Thank you guys.

I used a 1/4" E8 with 10" + 4" extensions. I had my E8 up against a bunch of magnets for a couple of weeks like Harald suggested and it worked beautifully. I didn't even have to remove any parts of the driver's side airbox and took about 45 min total. Thanks a bunch everyone!

Scan showed P0335-Crankshaft Position Sensor. Couple of questions. Can someone verify the correct Bosch part number as 0261210170? Also I have read that it might be safer (not necessary easier) to go at this by removing the driverside wheel and heat shield. I'm not much of a wrench and terrified of losing the hold down bolt (even after magnetizing the socket) into the depths of never return. Is the fender liner a and heat sheild fairly easy to remove. Diagram lifted from Harald's post via the embedded link in this thread. Thanks in advance for feedback and encouragement. I removed the vacuum hose from the brake booster and moved it out of the way to give a little more access, then used about a 1 inch piece of electrical insulation tape with the sticky side over the end of the E8 socket, this gave a nice resistance fit when I pushed the socket onto the bolt head which retained it perfectly for removal & instillation.
