Photo DIY- Differential Oil Change

Greets.

I know this is a "Basic" post for you Pro's. I am directing it to fellow "novice" wrenchers. If you done it a million time in the past, you are wasting your time reading this post.

I use a European WIS, which has different Mileage Specs on the ASSYST/Service Sheet. "Conveniently" the USA Sheet makes the intervals to lie JUST outside the "Included Maintenance" period of 4 yrs/50,000 miles.

One such service is the Differential Oil Change. Euro WIS- 80,000km (~48,000 Miles), USA- 60,000 Miles. I opted for the more conservative interval, and am doing the work at 50,000.

Although the Redline oil is NOT included on Sheet 235.7, I have used it on other vehicles for several years, and there is a VERY positive "thumbs-up" from other forum members. I am NOT promoting it's use. Included is the Spec Sheet 235.7:

It is suggested to do the change with the Oil "warm". Use caution with hot oil!!!

That has to be one of the cleanest G undersides I've ever seen.

RE: Photo DIY- Differential Oil Change

Yes, Yes, I know!!

I was expecting to get harassed about that. I did pics of both the W460 (which, you will be happy to know, IS dirty.... as this is the truck I DO take off road), and my wife's G55 which see little off road travel.

Re: Photo DIY- Differential Oil Change

1. Great Post
2. I concur regarding the cleanliness of the underside of your truck. Well done.
3. To my knowledge, Harald of 4x4ABC posted that the axles needed to be compressed to do a complete fill, particularly for the rear axle, in order to get oil to the wheel bearings....You can under-fill by about 1/2 a liter if axles are not compressed to my knowledge.

4. For NEW owners, I would recommend doing a flush/fill at 1,500 miles...

5. Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 I have been extremely happy with.

How does one "compress" the axles?

111,000 miles on the 280GE and 53,000 on the G500 so far - both with numerous axle fluid changes; but I've never heard of this or done it to my knowledge before.

Fwiw, the wheel bearings do not, should not, see the diff oil. They are lubed with wheel bearing grease and sealed against any intrusion of the diff oil.

Re: Photo DIY- Differential Oil Change

Dutch: Please reference this thread here:
http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=19174&po...

From Nadd: "I would recommend changing the axle oils while the axles are compressed, because you cannot fill them to the max if the fill hole is lower than normal. I recall seeing a photo of a lifted G that had drilled new fill holes at a higher level, because lowering the axles (or lifting the car) results in fill hole dropping down a bit."

From Harald / 4x4abc: (Regarding topping off while truck is on the ground)
"yes you should - the correct oil level supplies oil to the rear wheel bearings for lubrication
front is not that critical"

FYI- I did not realize this. After I posted the photos, I put the truck on the ground...And was able to easily get another half liter into the rear diff with the truck on the ground.

Re: Photo DIY- Differential Oil Change

I can't argue with the Guru's on this site..

All I know is the FIRST thing listed on the MB Specified WIS procedure is,

"Raise Vehicle with Vehicle Lift".....

Maybe the other members will chime in...Hard to argue against the WIS.

There are different kinds of lifts. There's the frame lift and a lift that raises ramps driven on my the wheels.

Re: Photo DIY- Differential Oil Change

All I know is: The Photos shown in WIS in the "Raise Vehicle on Two Post Lift" show the G being Lifted on the CHASSIS Jack Points, not on a hoist where 4 Wheels are contacting the Lift Platform; or in an Inspection Pit.

Now, there *IS* a Notation "Vehicle Must Be Horizontal"... No Duhhhh... I'm not quite sure how/why you would place the truck on a Lift in a postion OTHER THAN Horizontal?
