Per Hipine's request, I am showing my Valve Adjustment Screw Replacement on the M110 Engine. The Job was "Disappointingly" Simple. I thought it was going to be a big deal, but it wasn't. The ONLY "trick" not mentioned in the manual is when one replaces the rocker arm, you need to have the "Thrust Piece" of the valve (the top-most portion of the valve--where the rocker arm presses against) actually has a "groove" where the rocker arm slides into. I learned this the "hard way". Since the Rocker Arm nearly "fell out" after compressing the valve spring, I didn't notice the groove. When I FIRST re-installed the rocker arm, I just "slid it back in". When trying to adjust the valve clearance, I was turning A LOT and the clearance was still SUPER TIGHT. Re-Installing with correct orientation solved the problem. The other "curiosity" was my German Manual's recommendation of lubing the threads with "Talg". Granted, my German is WEAK but, I think this is Pig Fat. No, I'm not Jewish..... but the thought of wiping pig fat on my engine parts..... well.... it seemed a bit "Un-Kosher". Remember, this adjusting screw and it's "Bushing" base, are all part of the Oil Lubrication System for the Valves, so NO METAL SHAVINGS doing this job, and DON'T use an adjusting screw WITHOUT the "Hole" at the top. Sorry I don't have the Disassembly steps for the Valve Cover Removal. It will be coming up in a future post for Valve Adjustment. Are you turning the motor by "bumping" the starter ? I look forward to adjusting my valves this winter for the first time (by myself) but have always been a little intimidated. I used to do my 617s with my eyes closed. Mike

And don't be intimidated about the valves... if this Temple Monkey can do it, ANYONE can!

Yet another reason not to put up with sub-optimal conditions in the M110. Not a big deal to make it right. -Dave G.

Take the sparkplugs out and you can turn the engine over by hand and with a better feel to bring the piston into a down position before pushing the valve in. Also those little tappets in the valve retainer can be worn, same with the cam follower (rocker-arm) which makes the correct valve adjustment almost impossible. Karl
