I figured since I'm doing the job, might as well pass it on to someone who wants a more "Complete" change than what you will get at your Stealership.... Yes, "most" Stealers will just drain the Radiator... and stop there. PLEASE NOTE THIS PROCEDURE IS FOR THE M110 ENGINE OF 280 GE W460. I will post the Procedure for the W463 Later. I know the Manual specifies "Change Coolant Every 3 years", my overly anal schedule is every "TWO" years. My friend who is the lead tech at one of the largest MB dealerships in the USA does this schedule on his own vehicles. Plus, the horribly hot and humid conditions where I live keeps me on the overly compulsive schedule, along with ANNUAL brake fluid changes. The following procedure is straight out of the WIS. Yes, I know "alot" of people will ding me for going through all the hassle to drain the two Crankcase drains, but this is MY REASONING: With the common "flush with fresh water" technique, how in the heck do you get the concentration correct??? You have so much "trapped" water within the block, how do you calculate how much "straight" Coolant to add.... I don't know... I guess it is the scientist in me that requires things to be exact... With the WIS method, you will ALWAYS have the correct concentration, even "if" there is a little residual in the system (ie. heater core) Yes, MB DOES approve of the Vacuum re-fill system. It is in the WIS, and is covered in the Startek Technical Series. It is a REALLY, REALLY cool "Toy"... you get ZERO trapped air bubbles in the system, PLUS, you Refill the whole system in less than 30 Seconds!!! When beginning, run the car with Heater ON, to open up the fluid in the heater box. A few words of caution: Be EXTREMELY careful when opening the reservoir cap- Only remove when less than 90C. Also, where a face splash shield, clothing protection, and, of course, gloves. Doug, No, I haven't. According to the MB Tech article I read, they specifically advise AGAINST doing such treatments. I'm relying on my frequent fluid change schedule to prevent the build-up.... I rely on the "mass production" aids, because, typically, I do all FOUR vehicles at the same time for the various services (brake flushes, etc), so for me TIME is money... | ||

Even though I'll probably never own the tools required to complete such a procedure, I'm glad to find out about the drain bolt in the block. It would of been nice to know this back when I was trying to save my old radiator. Does the 617a have this drain bolt as well? | ||

Vacuum=Absence of air sooo, if you don't have any air in the coolant system.... then how can you have "bubbles" (aka "air") forming?? The negative pressure sucks the fluid into the same volume as the vacuum created. On the W460/M110 system, it's not as impressive as the on the "New" type of coolant systems where you have the "Remote" Expansion Reservoirs, which are connected to the radiator by those Weenie tubes which make re-filling a real slooooooooow drag. Since there is a good vacuum present, it just SUCKS the fluid in like a humungo straw. I'll post the W463 job later. I suppose the 124 tools should work on the M103, though I will check the W210 thread to be sure. Thanks for the post (and photos). | ||
