Yes, a very basic maintenance item, but one I think is overlooked, and often is POORLY and INCOMPLETELY performed.
Ask the "Stealership" *HOW* they do their $49.95 "Coolant" services...... I think you will find *MOST* will just drain the Radiator, and Refill.... end of story!
This leaves around 1/3 of the fluid still in the system. Yes, perhaps an infusion of fresh anticorrosive coolant is better than nothing,,,,, I believe in the WIS SPECIFIED method of Coolant Service as shown in this Post.
Personally I do Coolant Service every TWO years, instead of the "recommended" THREE years. I live in a horribly harsh environment of heat, humidity and salt, thus, my desire to have a more "accelerated" schedule. I also change the brake fluid ANNUALLY.
Since I do a "complete" drain frequently, I see no need to do the "Fresh Water 'FLUSH'".... Plus, I've NEVER understood the logic of how one estimates how much Straight fluid to add to compensate for the residual "Water" in the inner spaces of the engine. And, on the "modern" motors, how do you CHECK the true concentration??? All you are checking is the RESERVOIR, and NOT the actual fluid moving around IN the engine!!
Please use care when working with the coolant system. ONLY open the system with temps less than 90C, and do it SLOWLY. Wear a face shield, gloves and protective clothing.
**ALSO, DUE TO PROXIMITY TO THE STARTER, I OPTED TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY***
Please Dispose of the Coolant per your LOCAL regulations, even though it is classified as "Biodegradable".
Apparently Zerex 05 is the "same" thing as the MB fluid for cheaper. WIS allow Distilled H2O. (Our water here is horrible).
I would strongly recommend the Vacuum Fill method. With the "Remote" expansion reservoirs, and their "weenie" tube with go to the radiator, it takes a long time to fill with the normal "gravity" method.. Plus you have the issue of "burping" out any retained bubbles in the system.
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS FOR THE 113.982 ENGINE ON THE G55!!
After doing a similar service on the M112 engine of the W210, it is "Similar". Only Volumes are different, AND a higher Drain Bolt torque of 12 vs. 10 Nm

Great write-up G-AMG, also thanks for posting a photo of the whole W124 pump. If it works on the M110 and M113 I'd hope it also works on the M103.
Could you not reach the radiator valve from the front/top? I vaguely recall doing it by removing the grille and headlight surround on that side, but that's on the 300GE, the M113k engine bay will surely be more dense. |

Any suggestions on a "vacuum" make and type? Can I purchae a "vacuum" that could be used for both oil AND coolant?

I have both the "low-end" and the "High-end" models(OEM MB aka Leitenberger), both work equally well.

Nice work! I know it takes twice as long to get pictures and write it all up as it does to just do the job. Thanks for taking the time to help others. I've never used the "pre-vac" method you describe but I have to admit, I'm curious now. I think I'll recommend it to some of my LR buddies. Those have been prone to bubbles since the '90s.

Hey thanks for the response. I just picked up some Zerex G-05 coolant and need to flush out. I was going to originally just drain the coolant from the red valve in front, but it seemed kind of like a half-ass-way to do it. Thanks for your DIY post.
Oh and I just ordered that pump off ebay. You're tha man.

Hi,
I am going to replace radiator upper, lower hoses and bypass hose as preventive maintenance.
Is this DIY will be same for 2004 G500 because I don't think I have ATF under skid on mine?
If I'm changing all hoses, do I still need to take out drain plug?
Since it's going to take about 12 Liters, do I just need 6 Liters of MB coolant?
Can this be done on Jack Stands, not on a hoist?
Although it looks straight forward, does anyone have instruction for changing all hoses mentioned above?
Can I do it without use of a vacumn? or please recommend one that I can use for oil as well.
Just for curiosity, if there is s air pocket, wouldn't it eventually disappear?

I haven't done the hoses on the W463, only the W460.
I would imagine you do not need to lift the truck to do this job.
Since this post, I have switched to COMPLETELY REMOVING both of my Skid Plates, when I do my coolant services.. a few extra minutes, but much easier access!
I think you will need to remove you skid plates to get to the lower hose.
In terms of Draining the system first? You probably Don't need to. Remove the lower hose, and let things drain from there.
And, No, you don't "NEED" the Vacuum system. The thermostat has an Self-Purging hole in it.
Yes, you will need 2 Gallon Jugs of MB Coolant, and 2 Gallons of Distilled water.
Please post your pics on the "regular" forum for Vetting, before sending them to the DIY site.
