Photo DIY- Diavia/Sanden A/C Compressor Seal R/R

As a follow-up to my previous post of "Leaking Compressor"--

After contacting (with photos of the problem) I get the answer back, "NO! There is NO repair for such a leak.... You have to buy a new compressor $350"

Well, I decide, instead, I opt to take charge of my own destiny, and visit my local Auto A/C warehouse, showing the owner my problem... He throws a $4.50 gasket set at me and says "This will solve your problem..."

Hmmmm, Nothing ticks me off more than companies being dishonest!

As all projects on the old Klunkerwagen, it gives me a great opportunity to "Learn Something New", in this case A/C work. A/C has always been one of many "Pandora's Boxes" which I thought was a "Taboo" don't try yourself job.

Other than "reclaiming" the original Freon (which was un-necessary in my case due to all the R12 leaked out), the work was quite easy and a "no brainer".

Thanks to Dai's wonderful tip on the Freeze 12, I was able to get around the need for tracking down "Real" R12. Last time I did this, it involved a shady back alley transaction with some guy in a trenchcoat.... a PAIN, and EXPENSIVE!! Unlike "real" R12, Freeze 12 is not harmful to the environment, and is "Legal" for a non-licensed person to buy.... (it is also a FRACTION of the cost of the real stuff).

Anyway, here's the step-by-step for work on the Diavia aftermarket system which uses the Sanden 508 Compressor.

I know this is not exactly "G-Specific", but I hope it helps someone..

G

Yes, I can see from your photos that all the tools involved are those run of the mill, junk drawer types ... LOL Did I see a lift in one of your photos, too? Great write up - I feel the same way about automotive AC after having installed the unit in the 280 before moving to Texas. I am really interested in replacing the cheap-o under the dash AC unit and the heat with an integrated system from Vintage Air (San Antonio.) I'd like to have AC that is bi-level and that can be sent to the back seat through the existing vent. Also a true defrost/defog would be a nice feature ...

Again, nice photo directions! Also that garage floor looks clean enough to eat off ...

Hi G-AMG,
is the DIAVIA aftermarket ARCON a specific model for Gs? In that case which model is that one?

As you can see the Sanden my 280 is not necessarily G specific ...

Hi!

No, I don't think the Diavia is "G-Specific". My compressor is a "Standard" Sanden SD-508.

What I "DO" know, though, is that there "IS" a "Non-Standard" sized Wheel Pulley on the front of the compressor.

The A/C warehouse guy said it is "Much larger than usual". He said you could fit a "standard" pulley.... you would just have to use a Smaller V-Belt.

I have actually spent ALOT of time trying to track down info about Diavia units, including writing Italy.. they "seem" extremely hard to find, so I wish you luck!

Warm regards to Macedonia... I notice they have been pushing "Bring your business to Macedonia" ads on TV lately.

Wow! I wonder what the carbon offset of repairing the compressor is vs. buying a new one?? All of us G owners can offset the poor fuel economy by fixing the vehicles instead of buying a new one.
