Greets.

Yes, I know this post was for a W210, but since it is the "same" Transmission as alot of the G's on the road,,,, I thought I would "throw it out there" for you folks.

I guess I am surprised that the Conductor Plate (ie. "Electronics Pack", "ETC") is a well know problem on other models with the 722.6, but I don't recall seeing this issue raised with the G.

Also included is the R/R for the Pressure Regulator Spring for the "2nd Gear" section of the Valve body, another "Achilles Heal" of the 722.6 box. The symptoms are a "rough" shift 1->2 and 2->3. The spring can Snap, or Shorten, giving these symptoms. And (like many other parts MB uses.... ie. my Power steering pump on the W140--- MB doesn't sell a stupid Gasket kit for a small leak... I even tried to contact LZ/Sachs in Germany... also no kit...
"Oh just throw the whole part away"), MB does not even LIST a part# for this spring.. Like the lead tech down here says... "Oh, we just put in a new Valve Body...." Great! Throw out a zillion dollar part for a few$ spring...

I also included the R/R for the "New" Bushing for the Trans. Electronic Connector.


Anyhooo, My particular story was this:

A well know problem to us all.... Failure of the "Electronics Pack/Conductor Plate"....

With 2 other MB with the 722.6 box, I've "always" noticed a "Difference" in the way the E320 shifted.. Even straight out of the Sindelfingen plant... "A different thrust/weight ratio??".. who knows...

Well the Human self-defense mechanism of "Denial" is quite strong.... After having a progressively more "noticeable" shifting between 1->2, and 2->3.... "Well, I'll reset the computer".... It is slightly better for "awhile"... then Yuck. "Well I say (again) to myself.... OhLord *DID* say the new 722.9 fluid causes a harsher shift...""

My bubble of Denial burst the other day... Going to work... at a stop sign, hit the gas... VVRROOMMM... but am NOT MOVING!! Ok, let's try reverse... VVROOOMMM

Oh.... Sh.....ugar!! A $5,000 trany needed!!

After a "reset" I get home, and hook my Baby up to my new "toy" STAR Compact3.

Since I have the diagnostic skill of a Temple Monkey... I use my "Mechanic in a Laptop" to take my hand and guide me down the diagnostic tree to determine my "Speed Sensor #3" is "Intermittently" failing.. So, I'll change it out.

Thus, the post.

Here is a list of needed Parts:

8 quarts of the "new" MB fluid 001-989-68-03-10
Filter 140-277-00-95
Pan Gasket 140-271-00-80
Lock Clip 140-991-00-55
Trans Pan Drain Washer 140-271-00-60
Torque Converter Washer N 007603010100
Conductor Plate/"Electronics Pack" 140-270-11-61
"Updated" Connector Bushing 203-540-02-53
Pressure Regulator Spring (Yes, those Idiots at MB change out the WHOLE Valve body, rather than the stupid $8 spring-- thus, NO MB number) Sonnax 68942-01 You should be able to get it at your local Transmission Supply house.

Like the WIS warns.. "Even a Speck of Foreign Material can Cause **FAILURE** of the Transmission"---- So BE WARNED!! Absolutely METICULOUS Cleanliness must be observed... I LITERALLY wore surgical garb, so no Hair, no NOTHING would inadvertently fall into the valve body... and I did the work on a sterile surgical drape.. Overkill?? Perhaps... but that's just me...

Of course, "usual" safety procedures must be observed. If you don't know what that means... then this job is NOT for you.. Do work at your OWN RISK!!

You always amazes me......

Here is another fine write-up about a needed tranny repair. The last time I did reinstall a valve body, the car shifted so hard that it felt like some body hit you with a baseball bat from behind.

If I ever need this repair I'll pack two boxes of surgical gloves and head for South Texas.....

I used this procedure again on the G500 this weekend. The only point to note for the G class, is that the anti-roll bar is below the transmission pan and slightly in the way.

You don't need to remove the bar but just be careful when you drop the valve body out and when you put it back in. Thoroughly clean the anti-roll bar too, just in case you knock it with the valve body and get road dirt on it.

Not to distract from an excellent article and amazing detail, good photography - please remember about 30% of male population (I am told) is red/green colour blind. I find some of the text over the photos difficult to read. White text preferred.

My 2004 C220 cdi (W203) 722.6 box, went into limp mode shortly after I purchased it with ~220,000kms on the clock. Diagnosed as a faulty card with ATF up the two metres (on R/H drive car) cable, almost reaching the control module, Referred to as the 'wicking' problem on the UK MB Club site. The card and wiring harnesss was replaced at a cost (to me) of nearly $1,500.

David,

Did you try the "Electrical Cleaner" Trick to try to wash out the ATF out of the "Card" area, and down the Cable?

And, yes, sorry about the fonts.. This was posted a while ago. I have since switched to either White, or Black lettering.
