weeping seals on wheels -404 -yes I tried searching

Hi Folks, I am looking at purchasing a 404 and have given it the once over and everything seems to be there considering the age of the vehicle. It is 1963 vintage and is ex Swiss mil. The speedo says a little over 8000km and whilst I am not easily led to believe in odometers this truck is in very good condition. The question I have is regarding some seepage at the wheels on the inside of the reduction/portal housing. This is on all 4 corners! The vehicle has been standing for some time and there is some weeping there. Any ideas as to how much of an issue this is would be great. Many thanks. Pete

That doesn't look too bad. Often times they will weep due to non-use, and will be fine once they get driven again. A good thing to look at is to open up the oil fill plug and ascertain just how low they are. Fill them all up with oil and drive around a few miles. Then inspect for visual leakage, it will either be bad, or just a small leak. The job to replace the seals isn't that bad to do, so if they are trashed I wouldn't kill the deal if it's the truck you want.

Thanks. I think I will do the deal on this. Looking forward to owning a mog again.

Peter

Not meaning to hi-jack your thread; are you importing or is this mog already in the country? If still to be imported, will the LHD not be a problem for registration? Which engine? In 1962 I drove the 280 petrol engined 404. The Army Gymnasium then had a small fleet as troop carriers.

More pictures will be nice!

Luckily this is already locally registered and is now registered in my name along with a CA plate. The weeping seals have behaved themselves, the vehicle just needed some driving. She has done around 500km with me so far and all is going well. Pete
