While testing some new trailer wiring I had done on the G I noticed the glow plug light was not functioning properly. Bummer. You can see what happened next. A lot of people around here will say if one plug fails you should replace them all, and I think that is sound advice. However, it's Saturday night, I have a sinus cold, and I only have one extra glow plug. So after careful consideration, I decided that only changing one plug would be acceptable in this situation.
Standard disclaimer: I'm no expert. This is only for entertainment. If you follow my instructions and things go down hill on you, don't blame me. Use the proper manufactures instructions. You can use a test light in the same way, at the plug socket at the relay box or touching each plug end if you don't happen to have a multimeter available. When they start to go, I like to replace the set, if I have the time and the new plugs on hand. I test the ones I remove and keep the good ones around as spares for a quick fix. -Dai

Problem is access to some of the glow plugs due to the inlet manifold. That's when the creativity with the extensions comes to the fore...

Funny my #4 plug is the bad one as well. With my system, when there is a fault in the glow system the light will not come on at start up but once started the light comes on and remains on for 1 minute. Does your system do this? Thank goodness I have the Espar aux heater that I turn on to heat the engine so I can start it for now till I replace the glow plugs. Mark Edited by Inkblotz 3/5/2011 9:15 AM

Creative sockets and extenders made it go fairly easily. Though I only had one bad plug, I went ahead and replaced all of them. Thank goodness the nuts are attached to the wires as my big hands would never be able to reach in there and get them started. I found that by jamming a bit of black electrical tape into the socket(sticky side out) I was able to better control the plugs as well as the nuts. Thanks again for the write-up.
