Here's a How-To for R/R IMPORTANT! AT THE END OF THE PROCEDURE, BE SURE YOU PUMP THE BRAKES PRIOR TO MOVING, THEN RE-FILL RESERVOIR IF NEEDED. TEST BRAKES THOROUGHLY PRIOR TO ENTERING ROADWAYS. May I just add to the benefit of those users who are thinking "but I don't HAVE all those tools at my disposal - I can't do this", I tried this on an early 463 and did not need the pad puller or piston spreader; you can improvise with a wedge, drift punch and drum brake service hook. But having held that piston spreader in my hand, I must say there's little else like German engineering, even on tools!

Yes, I fully understand your point, yet on the other hand I like to "stick to the book" on things. I don't want to encourage folks to "use a big screwdriver and press the piston back by prying against the rotor"... I think there is a method to their madness. Is it worth bending the heat shield edge on the piston? I'm not implying one needs to get high-end stuff.... One can get Piston Spreaders for $30 bucks. My philosophy is, "IF I were to have someone else do it, they would charge me $X, if I do the job myself.... I can Treat my trolley to a new addition."

And I know for a fact it works on the early 463 non-vented brakes. The brake pad puller would be nice, but that can be improvised on the spot. (read: vice-grip) I suggest having extra pins on hand when doing the brakes. Mine had so much surface corrosion on them I had to use a dremel tool to remove them.

The brake set up is for G500 or earlier G55 (not sure until which year) Mine '05 G55 front brake set up is way different. You dont need a spreader, rather a *big* plier to squeeze the pistons. The pistons are on the inside of the rotors only. I do have pics for this set up but havent find the time to post for public consumption.

There must be at least 3 different variations of G55 brakes since their launch in 1999/2000 - I think these are the 2000-2004 model?

I encourage you to post your photos, for compare/contrast.

I guess with the intro of G55K in 2005, MB had to upgraded the front brakes.
