prbmeat Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | successful install of ilder pulley & tensioner I had a friend of mine who owns a German garage assist and help in case I needed it ... Not sure who has hands small enough to replace the tensioner without having to remove the radiator ... the idler pulley looked do-able with out radiator removal . Either way, while we were opening her up (translation - removing the radiator)... we intended on replacing the harmonic balancer. Notice I said intended. Oh my! Not sure how much torque is necessary to pop the bolt of the harmonic balancer ... but we could not pop the bolt and didn't want to create problems that we were not prepared to address. And we really went after it if you know what I mean. We snapped and bent some very thick steel in trying ... and used heat. You can see I was able to save my coolant as well (orange bucket) ... saved a few bucks there as well. I filtered it when putting back in ... We did need to file down the housing just a very little bit ... just as Karl delineated in his instructions. Just follow the instructions! You can see the thick allen wrenches I used (to keep the balancer from spinning when i torqued) when trying to remove the bolt from the harmonic balancer. I wish i could have changed that. Any suggestion on a successful removal of that bolt would be greatly appreciated. I tried to remove the fan as well ... and that proved to be tricky ... buteasy enough to work around now that the radiator was out ... so I said fu$k it. So those were my only 2 hiccups, but had little to nothing to do with the pulley install. And Harald ... I installed a new CPS as well ... that was cake. So thanks for sage advice. Also, a special thanks to the guys at VLMSpec for letting me use their tools, space, professional supervision. Many more preventative maintenance mods will be done there ... and a great garage right ON DONNER LAKE. You can't beat it. Easy job, took about 40 min. The hardest part was figuring how the belt went back on ... really Old idler pulley and tensioner pulley both spun freely, the idler pulley had cracks in the plastic housing. The tensioner pulley was a steel version on my 2002 G500 and there was a slight noise from the tensioner pulley, presumably from a broken ball inside the bearing or just a dried out bearing. I did not need to remove the fan or shroud in front of the pulleys to get them out, the space is a little limited though. My truck has 93K miles at time of service. The replacement belt I used was a Contitech 2380mm belt, replacing a 2390mm Mercedes belt. I had a 50/50 chance and ended up a bit short. Went on easy though once I figured out the alignment. prbmeat Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: successful install of ilder pulley & tensioner FYI - i had the same problem with the belt. For quick reference the mapping of the belt is in the back of the drivers manual. In one case I had the belt mapped properly, but it was not sitting in the grooves exactly on the pulley (meaning it was not set perfect) ... I started up the vehicle and shredded the belt. I learned 2 things that day ... 1.) make sure that the belt is sitting on the pulley properly and 2.) Napa Auto Parts is open on Sunday.

The questions have been: 1-What pulley are you using? 2-Did you have to have the aluminum pulley machined? 3-Is the aluminum pulley a direct fit? Answers: 1-G-wagenaccessories.com aluminum pulley 2-No 3-Yes Edited by otiswesty 8/10/2011 4:16 PM
