Replace ignition switch on 460s

I had the luxury of fair warnings of "failed to turn ignition switch" and the dilemma of cutting it out.
It started to happen to me about a month and half ago. So the spare key was used and kept
in the ignition switch while a new switch was on order. I had few scares where I was stuck on a side
street for an hour while tried to jiggle my key around to get it to turn.

New one was expensive but give me a peace of mine.

My G is a diesel. This is what I did.
1) Unscrew the ignition switch cover (4 screws)
2) Unscrew the turn signal switch (2 screws), remove zip ties if
....necessary to stretch out the turn signal switch
3) Turn the ignition cover switch 90 degree to expose the ignition switch working area.
....The plastic cover should be flexible enough to turn.
4) Locate steering column holding bolts (2) and remove them. Removing these
....bolt will allow the steering column to slide left (1 inch) to remove the ignition
....switch as left defrost vent knuckle is in the way.
5) Locate the ignition switch clamp and remove it. Use a big flat screw driver and
....enlarge the C clamp so it can spins around easily
6) From the new ignition switch, locate the small push pin nipple by the steering lock dead bolt.
....Locate the same from the current ignition switch. A small finger is good for this job.
....While pushing in the pin, slide out the ignition switch. Then push the steering column
....left to side the switch out completely. It will jam w the vent knuckle but there should be
....enough room to jiggle out the switch.
7) Remove the electrical connection from ignition switch and seat belt warning switch (???)
8) Remove the plastic cover of the tumbler switch
9) Locate the small pin hole on the ignition switch near the tumber. Turn the key on POSITION 1
...or where about and use a small pin to push in and slide out the tumbler.
10) With the steering dead bolt in (unlock steering), remove the warning switch (???)
.....from the ignition switch housing
11) Reverse the process for installation.

NOTE1: For stuck ignition switch, use a sharpie and draw two lines from the tumbler pin hole,
....5cm apart and cut out the tumbler housing. I would start cutting from the opening and work
....toward the pin hole. There is a latch and only release if it is in POSITION 1 or where about.

NOTE2: I got the instruction from Vlad for 463 version so the instruction should be same for 460/461
and early 463s

RE: Replace ignition switch on 460s

On my ignition switch my accessory position (POSITION 1) is blank and I want to use for
my stereo system relay. Since the old switch was avail. I ran a quick test to see which pins are
assigned to.

There are three positions: position 1 (ACCessory), position 2 (ON), position 3 (START)

Below is the pin lay out from looking at the ignition switch. The __ is the
flat edge of the connector insert key

.................R <-- energizes when key is in position 1 (ACC)
.........P30.___.50 <-- 50 is for position 3 (START)
........30............30 <-- both 30 & 30 are constant energized positive connection
............15......P <-- 15 is for position 2 (ON)
.................15 <-- 15 is for position 2 (ON)

See pics from the ignition switch and ignition socket.

Before removing the ignition socket, remove the battery. I made the mistake not to.
When the backing was removed, everything fell out. The wires jumped and my G
was almost started. I didnt have to remove anything, just reached my hand under
the dash, located the wires and pull it out. There is enough room and wires to install
the extra ACCessory wire.

I purchased just the wire, already soldered with the proper
contact insert from Vlad.
