I am trying to get my odometer fixed. I have it out on on my table right now. I have followed all the forums, however I am not able to get it apart. All the forums say the black ring around the face plate needs to come off but mine does not seem to want to or even look like it should. I tried to gently pry the ring to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank Ryan

Think of it like opening a can, but be nice with it you will have to recrimp it later. Then afterwards remove the 2 small bolts at the rear and the guts will come out. From this point on it's like watch repair. Here's some pics of when I did mine. To get at the odo, you will have to remove the needle and face plate...be warned the needle is set with some preload by the spring and you should check that before prying it off. I used a drill and an old speedo cable to spin check the calibration, you need a base setting for reassembly. Mine was 3000rpm on the drill made 85-90 km/h on the speedo. Now you can gently pry off the needle, I used a door panel tool tape to protect the faceplate. Next remove the 2 faceplate screws. Next remove screws that hold the assembly together. Now you will have to separate the odo assembly from the speedo drive assembly... tap the speedo drive needle out of the spring...(do this very gently if you bend it your screwed). Now the speedo drive can be removed and the odo drive gears accessed. Reassembly is the reverse...the tricky part is setting the preload on the needle so your speedo is calibrated...a small screw driver can be used to hold the spring while the needle is adjusted...then bench test...not easy but I did it this way. Once you have it all working place it back in the can and crimp the bezel. A speedo shop will charge over $200 for this complete job. Inkblotz - 10/11/2011 4:50 AM Thanks Mark, too bad I didn't have to repair the odometer on mine. If somebody wants to complete this DIY and add the odometer repair...feel free to do so. This would be a good time to paint the needles! It looks like they were originally orange. I'm I right or wrong ???? What paint should be used if so?? Stuart
