Thank goodness I live in the relative boonies, so I limp home, holding the door closed with one hand, and driving a stick-shift with the other,,, uhhh, ?Two?... I ordered the new springs, and was looking forward to an Overhaul of the Door Lock Mechanism. Unfortunately, every version of WIS which I have contains NO information on this particular topic. Once I got the inner door panel off, I could not, for the life of me, figure out HOW to remove the Tubular Door Bracing, in order to remove the whole Lock. So, I ended up doing an "Abbreviated" repair of the Main spring which keeps the door lock in the CLOSED position. You will see it IS do-able via the External Door Handle Orifice. Again, this is solely a "Entertainment value only" documentation of my approach to this repair, and is not intended as a guide for anyone to follow... But I do have some spare locks from the parts G here, so I must have figured it out at some point, I think. Or maybe these came from rear doors or something. You've got me bugged now Pat. I might have to haul one of the spare doors out of storage to get a look at it. Maybe tomorrow if it warms up a little. All the best, -Dave G.

Yes, I have had the REAR Door locks out, and I (also) don't remember having any issues removing the stupid thing.... but on the FRONT, there is a tubular reinforcement bar running parallel to the door jam which prevents the lock assembly from being removed. After scratching my head for quite a while, including the thought of taking the entire window/regulator assembly apart.... I ended up crying "Uncle" and did the Half-Baked approach.

To remove them, boltheads were drilled-off, then the remains of the bolt were drilled out. This is extremely difficult as the threaded insert is made of cupper, therefore, it's softer than the bolt and drill bit will find its way where you do not want. Next, while drilling, you overheat the insert and insert will "swim" away (guess how I know ;-)). Finally, restore the insert's thread, find new bolt and you are ready to put everything back togheter. This all can make doorlock repair two times longer, unless you do not have replacement doorhandle and you will not recover the old one.

It took a while to figure out the removal, but I finally took the window regulator and window out and was able to wrangle the lock past that reinforcement post. I did not have a new spring so I just "rewound" the end of the existing spring. It was the end that broke off. It is the right end in the picture of the cleaned up latch after repairing the spring. By the way, the latch sure works a lot better after cleaning the years of grime that had accumulated on it. Just for my information..... what is the part number for the spring and where did you get it? I imagine I will have to do it again in the future, at least with the other door. Thanks, Bruce Edit: Photo removed to be resized.

My Dealer had to source them from Germany, so it took a little while.... Edit: Photo removed to be resized. I'll try to attach my pic to this submission at the correct size. The spring at the top of the pic that goes horizontally is the one that broke on my latch and I "rewound" the right end of it as you can see in the pic. It's hard to tell, but I'm guessing it is number 14 in your diagram (A0007231434)????
