Photo DIY- 722.905 "7G Tronic" NAG 2+ Transmission Oil/Filter Change

Yes, I realize this is aimed at a very NARROW group on this site... but I believe the Newer G's have the 7G Tronic Transmissions. I have yet to see an actual "Pictorial" on this Newest Version of the 722.9, so I'll throw it out there for you..

As a very Clear Preface... this job is not for the average DIY'er. It requires a "Significant" number of Tools, including the STAR Computer, which is AN ABSOLUTE **MUST** IN ORDER TO CORRECTLY ADJUST THE FLUID LEVEL!!!

Also, I will be *CLEAR*, there are MULTIPLE VARIATIONS of these Transmissions, you MUST VERY VERY CAREFULLY Research you exact Transmission, to ascertain WHICH procedure to use, and which Transmission FLUID to use... the Latest uses the New 236.15 Spec Fluid which is BLUE!!!!! This Fluid is ***NOT*** Back-Compatible!!!

This Post is for a 722.905 NAG2+ Box in a 2011 E350 (212.056), which was Built AFTER the Latest/Greatest Update which was on June 21, 2010, so all vehicles after this date "Should" have the Green Overflow Pipe, and Beveled Pan. Again, *YOU MUST BE 100% POSITIVE* about your Transmission prior to starting the job.

ANOTHER *HUGE* CAVEAT!!- *DO NOT ATTEMPT THE "I'LL TAKE A LASER TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT OF THE PAN" TRICK TO GET THE OIL TEMPERATURE!!!" I have a nice, High-End Fluke Laser Thermometer, and what I was measuring at the Pan, and what STAR was Reporting??? It was OFF by a much as 10 C!!!! ***YOU MUST BE EXACTLY ON TARGET TEMP TO DO THIS JOB!!!***, and the Car must be **LEVEL**, so you will have to have it on 4 equal Ramps/Jack-Stands.

As you know, there is NO Dipstick to check the Fluid Level, and you "Pump" the Oil *UP* via the Drain-Hole. Instead, one needs to bring the oil Temp to a PRECISE temperature, and "Visually" evaluate the Flow of Oil out the Stand Pipe. What an IDIOTIC way to do an automotive job!!! My "moderate flow" or "Drip pattern" may be waaaay different than the next guy's interpretation. It's quite a "Joke" in my mind... BUT!! You must change the fluid in these boxes... so you're STUCK!!

Over-Maintaining me... I'm doing the Service at 30,000 Miles, instead of the Recommended 39,000 Mile interval.

In summary, I Intended this post to be "ENTERTAINMENT VALUE ONLY!!!!!!!" If you Don't have the Proper Set-Up, DON'T DO THE JOB!!

G

RE: Photo DIY- 722.905 "7G Tronic" NAG 2+ Transmission Oil/Filter Change

love your DIY's!
hate your font color choices on occasion - but I am working on my mind reading abilities

your mixture of quarts and liters confuses me
8.5 quarts are definitely not 8.5 liters

otherwise - keep it coming man

by the way, those out of focus images really irritate my eyes
blurry images force the eyes/brain to adjust focus - but they can't
that's as bad as lint in your tranny

Re: Photo DIY- 722.905 "7G Tronic" NAG 2+ Transmission Oil/Filter Change

Sorry, Mea Culpa... The key is to add a Half of (whatever Unit you are measuring) "EXTRA".

The Fonts? Yes, I've learned that the windows Paint colors show up "Fuzzy" unless you use Black or White. With my backround being sooo white and car parts black, I'm screwed either way.

Out of Focus?? Looks perfect to me! It's all the OTHER images which look Blurry!! Ha Ha!

I didn't mean to torture your Eye/Brain Interface... You have enough Rehab on your plate...

Re: Photo DIY- 722.905 "7G Tronic" NAG 2+ Transmission Oil/Filter Change

Congratulations on yet another great write up. I remember reading somewhere about the 7-speed being a pain to change fluid on, with it being best left to a dealer, but again I wouldn't trust a typical dealer to do all the steps you describe.

You got me interested in the jack stands - did you find those on the EPC? Can you please enlighten me as to where to look?
Do you know if there are similar ones for the W163?

Thanks

Nadd,

Here are the Applicable Models. If you send me a photo of the W163 Lift pads, perhaps I can get a better idea of where to look.

Re: Photo DIY- 722.905 "7G Tronic" NAG 2+ Transmission Oil/Filter Change

Nadd,

I just had a look at EVERY tool assigned to the W163, and I couldn't find anything remotely close to an "Adapter".. "Support",etc.. (Sometimes the Translation for the Description doesn't necessarily Fit the actual tool.)

The W164? YES! the pictured adapter will work.

Re: Photo DIY- 722.905 "7G Tronic" NAG 2+ Transmission Oil/Filter Change

Thank you very much G-AMG, much appreciated. I will try to snap a photo next time I'm under there. I've resorted to using the front and rear sub-frames to jack and position the axle stands. I keep using the G jack on the ML which has one of those screwy type jacks with severe limitations on where it can be positioned.

Re: Photo DIY- 722.905 "7G Tronic" NAG 2+ Transmission Oil/Filter Change

Raise your hand if you are happy you have an earlier transmission variant that is considerably easier to service...This procedure is rather ridiculous. Kudos to G-AMG for the write-up. I can see lots of transmission problems in the future as a result of techs who do not have the attention to detail to measure/fill/clean correctly, etc...

Re: Photo DIY- 722.905 "7G Tronic" NAG 2+ Transmission Oil/Filter Change

Great DIY write up and photos!
Question; After all back together and the extra 1/2 liter is flowing out, is the car running?
And is it running when you put the new drain plug in when the flow starts to break up and sputter?
I've done trans oil changes on BMW without a dip stick before and the engine needs to be running.
Do you know if the 2010 E350 has the same 7 speed as your 2011 E350?

Re: Photo DIY- 722.905 "7G Tronic" NAG 2+ Transmission Oil/Filter Change

Blanco.

Yes, the car IS running.

And NO the 2010 transmission is a DIFFERENT fluid (Good news it is CHEAPER.. The 236.14 fluid such as Shell ATF 134, of which i just picked up for $4.70/qtt).

Plus, the Procedure is Different. Different Temperatures, etc.

This DIY is *NOT* for your Vehicle. Is it "Close"? Yes! But you need to refer to WIS.

G-AMG - 5/11/2014 8:14 PM Blanco. Yes, the car IS running. And NO the 2010 transmission is a DIFFERENT fluid (Good news it is CHEAPER.. The 235.14 fluid works in both the 722.6 and 722.9 transmissions.  It is supposed to and, in my experience, it does.  I've been using Shell ATF 134 for a cumulative 80K miles now in two different 722.6.  One is short cycle city driven, the other long distance heavily loaded.  No problems of any sort with either.

Yes, for the 722.9 Transmissions *BEFORE* a Build date of June 21, 2010.

After that, you have to fork out the big $Dough$ for the 236.15 fluid. I have tried many different angles to source the .15 fluid, without success. I was able to find a Canadian company... but they required a 55 Gallon Drum Purchase!! A bit of overkill, even by my standards.. Ha Ha!!

Actually the 236.15 is also a Shell ATF 134, but the "FE" version (Fuel Efficiency), with a Lower Viscosity, if I remember correctly.
