This was an easy job on a W460. Not so with a W463, I imagine. The mirrors are available heated or non-heated. I chose the non-heated. Basically they swap over except for a couple of holes that are needed in the door frame for a top mirror bracket. I purchased the following to fit the upper bracket to the door frame: 4 x M6x20mm hex head stainless steel machine screws 4 x stainless steel 6mm rivtnut/nutsert/blind nuts A tool to fit the rivnuts. You dont have to buy a special tool for this, they can be fitted using an arrangement of nuts, washers and a bolt, which I have done before (Google "DIY rivnut tool"). I bought this tool because I find rivnuts so useful and my DIY tool was a bit hit-and-miss. There are also some awesome aviation tools for rivnuts, at "aviation prices" So to start you need to remove the door trim to get to the bolts which hold the mirror to the door. Remove all the fasteners shown, along with the door handle and window winder. Then remove these two bolts which hold the mirror, which will then lift and slide out to the rear. Once the old mirror is removed its time to swap the badge over to the new mirror or fit new badges if the kit came with them. Now fit the new mirror and bolt it to the door at the lower bracket, the same as the old mirror. Be carefull not to pinch the new rubber gasket which sits between the bracket and door. Once the new mirror is mounted you can mark out where the holes need to be drilled for the upper bracket. Once you have marked these holes with a pen remove the upper bracket from the mirror arm (M10 nut) so you can drill the holes and add the rivnets. After lightly centre-punching the holes drill them out using progressively bigger drills until the last, which matches the rivnut perfectly. De-burr the holes on the inside as best you can so the rivnut fits nicely. A stepped drill bit would be ideal but I did not have one. This shows the second hole getting a rivnut, the first has been fitted. Once the rivnuts are fitted the top bracket can be bolted back onto its arm and then bolted to the rivnuts. I also painted around the edges of the rivnuts (actually used nail polish I keep handy for stone chips and scratches) before putting on the top bracket and its rubber gasket. Then clean out any swarf/burrs that have fallen down into the door cavity then put it back together. And here is the end result. | ||
