Photo DIY- M110 CIS Fuel System Testing

Well, apparently it has been too long since I was a Teenager...

It seems that a "Difficult Hot Re-Start" can be a demasculinating experience, at least according to my two boys, who are learing to drive. (Ha Ha Ha).

Soooo, I thought I would check the CIS system out, to see if there was an Internal leak (ie. Leaking Fuel Injectors, or Leaking Cold Start Injector, etc).

I have several version of the Old Mercedes Manuals, including the Dreaded "Microfilch". NO WHERE can I find a specification for the 110.994 engine on my truck. I can only find up to 110.990, which I what I followed for this Posting.

Granted, I am in No position to be bashing on Mercedes manuals... but the Particulars on this procedure are a bit Schizoprenic, to say the least. You really have to scour the manual, as they have tid-bits "hidden" away in odd places.

I am not claiming that this post is an Exact/Correct re-creation of the WIS procedure, only my "interpretation" thereof.

Please be careful when working around fuel and electricity, at the same time, and be sure to check for any Leaks, after Re-Install.

The Only "Marginal" values I found were a slightly Low WUR Control pressure at Cut-Out, and a Slightly Low value at the 30 Minute Rest period.

Am I interested in spending $1,500 for a SLIGHTLY Wonky WUR? Not at this point....
A Microscopic Fuel Injector or Accumulator Ooze? Not at this point.

The Hot-Start is only "Occasional", and Fully alleviated by adding just a tiny bit of gas pedal, so I think I will Live-with-It!

"G"

Re: Photo DIY- M110 CIS Fuel System Testing

I have the Bosch CIS manual. Should I check and see if there is anything useful regarding this? I can also send to you if you want to read. I think it is a relatively rare book from this vintage...

RE: Photo DIY- M110 CIS Fuel System Testing

Another excellent instruction, thanks for posting this.
I almost feel bad now that I removed my m110 in my 280GE so I can't follow your WIS

At the time, I did disassemble the WUR to see if I could alter a few of those fuel pressures during the warm up period.

Also, should the M110 be Hot-Started with pedal depressed? I think so.
I can remember from my m110 days that the hot restart required some cranking. I fired more quickly with pedal depressed while cranking from what I remember.

gr. Bram

I seem to remember a kit of various washer shims that are used to adjust the fuel pressure going to the fuel distributor.

Is that not for the SYSTEM Pressure? My System pressure is smack-on Normal. I think it is the WUR which is subtly out of whack.

It is interesting to hear Bram's comment...

I wonder if anyone else has had the similar experience of needing to add a bit of Pedal on Hot Re-Start.

When I say "Hot", I mean REALLY Hot (ie. Summer time, A/C been running, Driving for quite a while).

Interesting. If you put that number in the MB Parts Catalog, it comes out as a front brake disk for a 2014 MB GL.

RE: Photo DIY- M110 CIS Fuel System Testing

Hey Temple Monkey,

If you haven't seen how to make these WUR easily adjustable by drilling and tapping the 'piston', I suggest you google it, makes fine tuning the pressures a breeze.

Also remove the fuel fitting @ the WUR (input side), there is a tiny screen in there that will catch crud over the years and cause strange issues, the fuel distributor has the same thing, I'd be sure give them a bath in an ultrasonic cleaner if you're ever working in that area.

If you can, check all 6 injector spray patterns just like you checked the CSV, I have found even brand new injectors to not spray well and dribble fuel onto the top of the piston, a diesel injector pop tester works well for this with the correct threaded adaptor fitting.

M110 tangent-
I bought a euro 1978 280E for my wife a while back, it was very cheap because it wouldn't run right.
The fuel pressures were WAY off, vac lines all mis routed (no vac line to WUR!). So I modified a couple old G WURs to be adjustable, set the pressures and viola! A pretty darn fast car that returns 22mpg and starts every time... accept when its hot it takes a couple seconds of cranking with the gas pedal floored.
Later I rebuilt the cylinder head, and found only 4 of the injectors had a good spray pattern, #3 and 6 were just pissing fuel off to the side, and of course only those two pistons were completely covered in carbon deposits... and only those two cylinder walls were atrociously scored by what Im guessing was bug chunks of carbon breaking off and getting digested or fuel washing the piston causing it to run dry of oil.

So the lesson is dont let your engine run for years with bad fuel pressures or poor injector spray pattern, the collateral damage of that 'slag' inside the combustion chamber can ruin the engine.

Re: Photo DIY- M110 CIS Fuel System Testing

Chris,

Thanks a bunch for the Insight.

I kinda' suspect I may have a Fuel Injector which is Dribbling, or Klunky Spray pattern...

I think it was YOU who figured-out my Poor Idling as a Carbon Deposit, and suggested the "Italian Tune-Up", which Solved the problem. Please note, it has NOT ever happened since.

An idea I was toying with: Somehow concocting an Adapter set-up to Run a Fuel Injector Cleaner to run through a CIS system. I have been told it is "not Possible", but I can't believe there is not SOME way of doing it. Here is the system for an ME-SFI:

Take Care!

The clock also has a cool function:

There is a built-in Receiver, linked to the Atomic Clock... so it always indicates the correct time!
