So I start my 100K mile Service by opening up the Hood, and pop off the Air Filter Box, only to find CAKED-ON Oil, Grit and Grime, ALL over the Cylinder heads. Since I don't like airing my dirty laundry, I refuse to show photos of how nasty it was. I am SHOCKED how the only evidence I ever had of a leak was an OCCASIONAL drop on th garage floor. After hours of scrubbing, she is all cleaned up. In my inexperience, I pressed on to Gasket R/R. Should I have used a fraction of my brain power to think: "Why not simply RE-TIGHTEN the Valve Cover Bolts, and see if the leak stops". I guess I was so freaked by the amount of Oil, I did not want to screw around.... The parts are cheap enough, so I opted to do the job. While at the Dealer getting the parts, the Foreman asked if I started with the Breather Cover Re-Sealing, as this is, apparently, one of the most common sources of Valve-Cover-Area leaks. Again, silly me... I hadn't even thought about the Breather Covers. Plus? In WIS, under my Model? THey don't even LIST the procedure!!! I had to go find it via my W210/E320 M112 Document! That DIY is to follow. You will also notice I changed the Breather Hoses (also per the advice of my Foreman Friend). Anyway, the Job is done, and hopefully I won't need to worry about this for another 100K! This is a great DIY posting so thanks G-AMG. A few thoughts and lessons learned when it's time for this job: - YES use the RIGHT sealant - YES pull the valve covers and install new gaskets too - Replace all of the crankcase hoses and connectors. Its not much money and you will have a tight system when done - Replace the MAF to Housing Intake Line (MAF width 90 degree elbow) seal and elbow to intake manifold seal. I found the MAF seal to be flexible but it would not hold the MAF tight enough for me to confirm a good seal. The new seal was very tight. - Use only Mercedes branded hoses, connectors and gaskets. I have found that their formulas are superior in this regard. | ||
