Re: Unimog

Well I can do the body work in a few weeks. The moter needs the #6 cylinder valves replaced due to a mouse issue but that is an afternoon.
Other then that not a big deal. I am figuring on 4 to six weeks so that means two to three months tops.
As long as it is done before the snow sets in I am fine

Re: Unimog

It has all the body parts needs some body work. Hey I got it for less then 1/4 of what it would cost together and running. So I may have to put up to 10K in it if things are REALLY bad but I still come out ahead of one ready to roll.
I have made more from less

Re: Unimog

Well the thing I like about it is that it is big and actually easier to work on due to having a lot more space. When I restored my first Unimog that was a great thing.
I can do all my own welding so that also makes a big differance.
Anyway as soon as it gets here I will start geting some pics up

Re: Unimog

There aren't many diesel boys (or girls) on this forum. This particular mog has had a roasting at benzworld already.

I've restored a 404, ground up (www.foodfight.org.uk/mog) and have a healthy respect for the big ones. They're bigger - and dearer.

good luck,

jim

Re: Unimog

The people on Benz World think if it not perfect so stay away. The axils and trans are worth what I paid for it so I am not going to loose. That and even if I put 8K into it I am still ahead on total cost of ownership.
They loose I win.
I did a 404 also it was fun. This will be better

RE: Unimog

Good for you on your new project. It's good to see someone willing to put some TLC into a poor, mistreated Mog. If you find the cab is worse than you want to fix you can always buy another cab from germany - there is a curved windshield cabrio cab and a hardtop cab on german ebay right now.

The best of luck to you.

Re: Unimog

Thanks.
After having and selling my 404 my kids have bugged me at least once a week when we are getting another. They love the Gwagon but its not a mog.
I so wanted a 406 or 416 but did not want to drop 15 + for a mog that would still need work. This way I can do it the way I want to. That and when I asked my wife she said sure on the first try so that must be a good sign. That or she is leaving and figures that me working on a mog is a good distraction while she packs

It looks like a good project and once it's up-and-running you can take care of the cosmetics as and when funds allow. Make sure you keep us updated with photos

Good luck!

Re: Unimog

Well it will be here Saturday.
I know it needs some work but if it didn't then it would of been more like 15K or more.
I have set aside 10K for the restore work.
I will take pictures and drink a lot during the path
Did I mention my wife is 100% behind it. She can not wait to take it in the mud

RE: Unimog

Sounds like a great project. I love this vehicle. We had one on our small Air Force site when I was stationed in what was then West Berlin. That thing could do absolutely anything. It got a lot of work outs scraping snow from our entrance road and parking lot, we used it as a forklift and for hauling the really heavy stuff on the site. Here is a picture of the fire and rescue Unimog at the Naval Station Rota, Spain I visited a couple years ago. I understand they just painted it. It was "fire engine red." Really interested in following your project. Please keep us updated.
