RE: Tires for a 406

There are a few coomon sizes that fit with no problems. My 416 has Continental MPT 81's in a 12.5x20 size. You can move up to the 14.5x20 size or the metric equivalents which I believe are 365/80-20 and 385 or 405/80-20. I think the ultimate tire depends a little on what you want to do with the truck. The Michelin XM-47 is AWESOME by all reports but EXPENSIVE enough to give you migraines.

Persoanlly I think I am going right back to the Contis I have. They wear seemingly forever, they have agressive tread but lees so than the tractor lug style tires. They also seem to be really really tough. The sidewalls are steel belted and I have run them on nasty sharp rocks aired down with no problems so far.

The best resource IMO for tires is the test in the book or dvd that Sean P sells. They do a full blown MOG tire test, then rate the tires for different conditions. You pick after that.

My Mog has Continentals too. The tread pattern is the one on the far left in the picture, which is a good mixture of off-roader and tarmac cruiser.

I replaced the original Cat Paws last year due to cracks in the side-walls. If you can still find them then a lot of Moggers still prefer the Cat

Paws (they look the part). Conti are a decent brand and it's nice to feel re-assured when you're driving the Mog down the motorway that

there's decent boots under you.

BTW, the picture is from the Unimog CD
