PHOTO DIY- EXTRACTION OIL CHANGE

Hi Folks,

I know most G owners are more mechanically inclined than most, so this is probably a silly post, BUT maybe for those few who may be reluctant to DIY, I thought I would show a clean and easy way of changing your own oil. Sooo, this is meant for the rank novice. For those who have done it a million times...well, don't waste your time reading this.

I am anal-compulsive, and religiously change oil at 5,000 Mi intervals, with Mobil 1
and have cars in the "fleet" running brand new after 100K miles. Luck? Maybe.

Anyway, enjoy.

The usual CYA blah, blah stuff. I am not claiming any expertise. My projects are based on my interpretation of the WIS procedures. Do work at your own discretion.

Excellent photos G-AMG. Not a silly post at all, quite the opposite. That is just the kind of thing most of us like to see.

Where did you get those nice Hazet tools from? I'm jealous.

Good article. The filter difference is that your new one is made by Mann and the dark topped one you took out is by Knecht. Both appear to be the new "fleece type". Personally, I prefer the Knect filters; but when you buy the MB branded box, you get what they put in it - low bidder.

My choice for the vacuum pump is this one:

http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/MIT-7201.html

It holds 8.8 liters and is far less work than the Topsider you tried, too.

While I do use of the Mobil 1 oils in my ML320CDI - since it and a Shell product are the only oils officially approved for the OM642 engine, I wouldn't put anything other than Redline in my G500; but in these cases of still being under warranty, you gotta go with what they tell you.

Strong agreement on the 5,000 mile changes with the filter!

Samstag Sales in Tennessee has the Hazet tools, complete with high prices and an attitude.

These folks are much friendlier to work with; and their prices, in my experience, are significantly better:

looks good. i might just have to get one of those suckers things.

I also need to gun some slugde / valve cleaner in mine... when you take the cap off to ad oil it all sludgie looking inside there. Kinda makes me mad dads old 98 SL500 looks brand new when you take that piece off. Wonder if it has something to do with the now 10K miles services vs his 3K mile... I have been doing mine at 5K but its still there.

While on this topic of changing fluids... have you dont a trans and axle fluid change?

I've done all four - transmission, transfer case, front axle and rear axle.

Dutch,

Thanx for clearing up the difference on the filters. The Knecht filter has a different Part#, AND has a "Lip" on either end.

G-AMG, Dutch,

To both, thank-you for the useful info. For me, photographs are great learning tools. Pun intended. Great way to save on labor costs, and to "bond" with the "G"

If you look closely, you'll see that there is a matching grove for those lips, both on the inside of the filter cover and down in the mount on the engine. It's one of the reasons I like the Knecht filters better. I feel that they achieve a better seal. No hard evidence to support that - just subjective observation.

If you check the WIS, you'll see that MB has been using the vacuum extraction method for a long time. It's a whole lot less messy than using the drain plug.

Re: PHOTO DIY- EXTRACTION OIL CHANGE

Dutch,
How can you differentiate the Knecht without tearing open the box?? I can't find a different part number other than 000 180 26 09, only the different numbers ON the filter itself, 112 184 06 25(Knecht) VS. 112 184 05 25.

When I gave the guy the actual part numbers on the filters, he didn't know what I was talking about. He was only able to pull up the BOX part# 000 180 26 09.

Where do you source yours from??

I don't think you can differentiate from the box, although there probably is some sort of manufacturing code on there.

I get my Knecht filters from Europarts San Diego: http://www.europarts-sd.com/

Tell the owner Steve Schock that I referred you. He apologized very strongly when I last ordered because the Knecht were more expensive than the Mann. FWIW, the Knecht P/N is: OX 153/7 D. However, this number is for the older non-fleece style, so you might want to see if he has the newer now-recommended fleece filters. Knecht is part of the Mahle Gruppe

Can't your local MB dealer help you? I've seen a few G500s in Ottawa so someone definitely has dealt with them unless they were brought up (or down) from either Toronto or Montreal.

By the way there is something very strange looking about where your doors meet the roof - too much space.

But the question is why is it like that - its not a double safari roof as far as I can tell (especially in Ottawa) and I don't think its armoured. The doors appear to be shorter than normal...

Sorry for going OT...

Re: PHOTO DIY- EXTRACTION OIL CHANGE

looking at the rear vent opening and the relation to the window and doors - it seems to me that the window as well as the doors have been shortened. For whatever reason. Maybe Arthur can shed some light...
