416 Restoration

I thought I would start my first post here with the details of a restoration myself and a friend of a 416 Soft top.

It was more of a clean up than a full restoration as mechanically it is in great shape with only 2000 hours on the engine.

The clean up took us 150hours each over one week to do.

The vehicle was ex belgium army and in need of some love.
Here is how it looked the day it arrived down here in Australia

Firstly we stripped it down as much as we could and sent the various parts of to be blasted and primed.

Tray is off

We backed up the 404 and slid the 416 tray onto that

The we set about fixing up some dents and giving the cab a spot of primer. We had already cleaned up the chassis ready for paint at that stage. As you can see we had oput one of the new tyres on where the spare was to see how it would look

Some pics of the Interior being cleaned up

The tray came back from the blasters and we decided to cut it down a bit.

We still have a couple of things to do yet, such as replace the front tyres(We cant undo the wheel nuts ) and give the brake system a complete fluid change, but thats all it needs

RE: 416 Restoration

Welcome to the forums and to the disease.

Well done on the restoration work! I really like the urban camouflage and the "oxenkopf" UNIMOG logo.

That's a very nice UNIMOG you've got there. Kudos to you for giving it a new lease on life.

A long breaker bar or a one inch air impact wrench should do the trick on the lug nuts. Remember to use antiseize and you won't run into that problem again.

I wish it was that easy

So far we have snapped a 1" single-hex socket on a breaker bar (it was Snap-On so they replaced it).
Then we snapped the new socket again after heating up the lug-nuts with an oxy and trying it. (Snap-On replaced that one as well..but with some strange looks)

Its off to a Truck Tyre shop to see if their rattle guns will work, if not its a new set of studs and lugnuts, and we will have to cut them off.

Hey Thanks for giving me the name of the Logo.. always wondered what it was called.

We have a new project now..its a U1700 to restore..so stay tuned.
