U1700L Restoration

Well we have just finished packing up a U1700L (or what was left of it) ready for Transportation from Queensland down to the shop in Sydney. Its a shame that the previous owner stripped it, threw away the cab and tray and left it in the state it is in for the last two years.

Some may wonder if we are crazy or bitten off more than we can chew but we like a challenge.

So as you can see we definately have a lot of work to do before its back on the road.

As you can see it has no cab or tray, but luckily pretty much everything else is there including Dash and interior items. The box on the back is the crate we built up on it to hold the parts ready for transport.

This one has the Factory RHD conversion.

Parts Parts Parts..now where do they all go

We actually got the full Mercedes Workshop Service Manuals with it so that will be a big help. A cab is on order for it, so thats one hurdle out of the way. We are still undecided if we will cut the cab down into a soft-top, but will decide that once it arrives along with my new 404.

Stay Tuned.

Well the good news is that today it looks like we have found our cab.
We were originally going to get a 1300 cab for it, but today we stumbled across a complete 4-door cab , well complete apart from the seats that is...so a few late night phone calls tonight and hopefully we will secure it.

Envious about the finished product but not envious about all the work to get there i bet
There is a lot of work to be done, but it will be worth it in the end.

RE: U1700L Restoration

Update - Well the mog made it to Sydney and was offloaded in the street. So we had to move it from the street to the shed..which while it looked like a tough job turned out to be easy..

Sadly though..the mog has now been towed by a Patrol, winched by a Toyota and dragged by a Hummer

The weekend we spent going over the air lines and the good news is that everything is connected. We hooked it up to a compressor and all the brakes, jake and deadman brakes, lockers etc work..

There is a leak in the power steering box, and one of the portalks, but thats all the leaks we can find.

Over the next two weeks we should have the axles and diff's cleaned up and repainted, as well as starting on getting all the brake cylinders etc rebuilt.

Well we definately have a cab for it now..I think that the cab has had a longer history than the truck though and needs a lot of TLC

The doors need some work to get rid of the rust, but they are a pretty simple design so it should not be to hard to fixed that up (we hope)

RE: U1700L Restoration

Some more work done yesterday.

We have removed the rear wheels and have the back up on axle stands at the moment. The Right hand side portal was leaking os we needed to have a look at that. It seems to be the portal housing that is leaking and not an internal seal so thats easy to fix. We have new seal kits coming in for thjem anyway so we will replace them all anyway.

We got the Sway bar off the back and that is getting blasted and powder coated

We are going to replace the exhaust so that was removed with an angle grinder..

A fair bit of Inox penetrating oil was sprayed over vaious fittings and bolts we have to remove, bu so far its been easy, everything is coming apart well and it seems that anti-seaze has been used on most of the makor nuts/bolts.

We will get some more pics of the progress, but its coming along well..hopefully we can get it cleaned and the chassis/diffs painted this week.

The first parts are coming back from Cleanup and paint. We are using POR-15 to paint the chassis and diffs and the finish is great. If I did not know any better I would say they had been powder coated

These are the rear sway bar links, the beer can is to give you an idea of the size..

The shear size if everything is hard to comprehend and not something we are used to dealing with
