Adding Aux-In to a Mercedes Audio 10 CD Radio

I wanted to play the ipod through my factory Audio 10 CD radio.  There are solutions out there but they are either lousy (RF transmitter) or expensive (Dice, etc).  Here is what I cobbled together:

When the slot-load CD player is playing away, the audio amplifier dutifully sends the audio output to the speakers.  The aux-in port breaks this audio path and plays whatever is coming in from the auxiliary input jack.  Unplug the jack and it reverts back to playing the CD.  The only catch is that the CD must be playing.  The audio levels can be different between the CD and jack, which can lead to a loud blast of music when the jack is pulled out.

Ingredients:

  • Magnetized medium Philips screwdriver
  • Fine tip soldering iron & skill
  • Thin diameter 4 wire + shield audio cable (two thin 2 wire + ground would work)
  • Headphone jack with break upon insertion
  • Shrink tubing

Steps:

  • Remove cover
  • Remove CD player drive
  • Move pictured resistors
  • Attach audio cable to resistors and open pads as shown
  • Attach audio cable to jack
  • Re-assemble in reverse order
I've done this to three radios now.  If someone wants to try this I can add more detail.

Re: Adding Aux-In to a Mercedes Audio 10 CD Radio

dumb question--how do you get the CD/Radio out in the first place?

Never mind, I found it in the regular forum--don't know why I looked in DIY first...

A small paring knife works pretty well too.  It won't hurt the radio, but the knife will be dulled a little.

First of all great post thnx!

Second, could I trouble you with more detail on the moving of the resistors (where are they conected after they are "moved")?

Thnx again

For each resistor, you will need to unsolder it gently from both ends and then resolder into the position shown.  In the end one end of the resistor should be soldered to the pad furthest away from the blue (probably) caps.  This breaks the audio path. The next steps bring the audio path out to the jack and back again.

Im having trouble getting the jack... i live in non english country so nobody knows what "Headphone jack with break upon insertion" means...

What type of part is that specifically? I suppose it might be this one, Marushin MJ-352W-C?

My dealer told me the same thing. I brought a copy of the WIS document that Dutch posted in this thread and they got it done pretty cheap.

RE: Adding Aux-In to a Mercedes Audio 10 CD Radio

I know I'm resurrecting a 2-year old thread... but..
First of all, many thanks to the original author for posting this...
I am going to provide a specialist with this info in order to add an aux to my Mercedes Audio 10 CD Radio (Alpine MF2910)...
Until then could you please satisfy my curiosity by telling me how is this going to operate?
I mean, should I open the radio, press the CD button and instead of CD it plays whatever is passed through the aux port?

Operation

You are welcome!

I suppose an operation guide would have been smart to add.  Here is goes:

To use the Aux In:

  • Insert CD (any CD will work)
  • Plug MP3 player into AuxIn
  • You will probably need to turn up the volume
  • Note: Audio will be muted whenever the CD "rewinds" to track 1.
  • Remember to turn the volume down when unplugging.

Re: Adding Aux-In to a Mercedes Audio 10 CD Radio

I sent my Becker radio into BeckerUSA and they installed an auxilliary audio cable to interrupt the tape player when active and a cord plugged in. The charge was $100 plus shipping both ways.

On nomal radios i have on 300GE and 300GD im using Dice universal Kit for ipod and satelite radio if one wants.

RE: Adding Aux-In to a Mercedes Audio 10 CD Radio

Hi Alan,
Love your work.

I am hoping to do something similar with another old radio I have, this time made by Bosch for MB. It has a lovely crisp display.

Did you find the audio signal from a circuit diagram or via an oscilloscope or similar?

This unit has a tape deck, which I will never use, so I was hoping to tap into the output of the deck before the amplifier.
Either that or somehow use the changer port.

RE: Adding Aux-In to a Mercedes Audio 10 CD Radio

I just looked up the amplifier or mixer chip (can't remember which now) and scoped out all the inputs.  It was fortunate that it had some impedance matching resistors in the path, that made the retrofit much easier.  I'm getting tempted to redo this fix with a bluetooth module.

Re: Adding Aux-In to a Mercedes Audio 10 CD Radio

Just finished soldering and it worked like a charm thank you Alan for providing the instructions!

I completely removed the resistors and solderen the left and right of a headphone jack directly onto the amplifier left and right. I cannot play anything from CD anymore, but who wants an Audio CD nowadays anyway.
